Abstract Indonesia, a country characterized by vitality, consists of more than 17,000 islands. At 250 million, it is the fourth most populous country in the world. Indonesia is also blessed with numerous tourist places, such as Bali, which is recognized as one of the world s leading resort destinations ; cultural heritage sites such as the Borobudur Temple Compounds ; and natural heritage sites such as the Komodo National Park. In an effort to decrease the economy s dependence on oil, the country s government has been heavily promoting inbound tourism as the mainstay of its economic policy. It is anticipated that tourism in Indonesia still holds amazing potential for growth. We held meetings with administration officials, mainly from the Ministry of Tourism, in the capital city of Jakarta and had a valuable exchange of views ; Jakarta serves as the nation s political and economic center. Further, we inspected several representative hotels for conducting a factual survey on the latest state of tourism in Bali, which attracts the most number of overseas visitors and is Indonesia s tourism hub. We conducted interviews and meetings with numerous local par-
ties involved. Our talks with tourist operators proved to be especially productive in terms of the information we acquired. This article reports on the field survey regarding the current situation of Indonesia s inbound tourism and summarizes the issues and prospects to ensure even greater progress of the nation s tourism industry.
