Research Concerning the Change of External Signs of Aging in Adults with Mental Retardation Hiroaki KASUGAI*, Atsushi KANNO**, Souichi HASHIMOTO**, Kazunori SAKURAI***, Hiroshi KATASE*** Center fot the Resarch and Support of Educational Practice** This study showed that there are features of external signs in Adults with mental retardation (MR) with aging applying Scale of external signs with aging for adults with mental deficiency (Sakurai, 1983). The purpose of the study 1, in 349 adults with MR, longitudinally, was to research each external sign with aging classifying into disabilities, sex, or chronological age (CA), to appear of relation between mental age (MA) and the external signs with aging, further, to show each characteristic of items in scale. The purpose of the study 2, in 55 adults with MR, latitudinally, was to appear the characteristic of their external variations as time goes by. In the results of the study 1, it is suggested that three summarized things. First; by the analyses divided by disabilities, the external signs with aging in adults with Down syndrome were more remarkable than any other disabilities. Second; by the analyses divided by CA, there were two groups in one of which the first external signs with aging appeared at 30, s age, in the other the distinct signs appeared for the first time up to 50, s age, and after 50, s age, the signs were more distinct in many cases. Third; the investigated 18 items in scale were divided into 4 groups; (a) Items changing rapidly during young, (b) Items changing gently with aging, (c) Items changing rapidly at middle and old age, (d) Items not changing. In study 2, it was suggested that there were remarkably changes with aging in three items of scale which were the wrinkle of the forehead, the hair falling off of the head top part, and the pigment spots of the face.
