Yamagata Journal of Health Sciences, Vol. 8, 2005 Chikako SAITOU, Miharu NISHIWAKI This study has been undertaken to make clear the relationship of menstruation pattern to self-awareness, premenstrual and menstrual discomfort symptoms, and daily life, and coping methods for discomfort symptoms. The survey was carried on 50 students of Y Medical University by questionnaires and measurement of basal body temperature June 2002. Data obtained were statistically analyzed by SPSS, especially on mean difference and correlation. Collecting rate of the questionnaires was 96%, and that of the report of basal body temperature was 86%. The average age of the subject was 20.6 2.6 years. "Dysfunction of the corpus leteum" and "menstrual cycle without ovulation" were diagnosed with frequency of 33% higher than other studies. The students having the former symptom showed regular menstrual cycle, but those having the latter symptom showed irregular one. Many discomfort symptoms before and after menstruation showed correlation among them, but stomachache, lumbago and diarrhea are significantly strong during menstruation. Headache and discomfort of the mammae were related to the time of getting out of bed. Coping methods were by resting in bed and taking painkiller in most cases. menstruation pattern, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), menstrual discomfort symptom (dysmenorrhea), daily life, coping method.
