You select a noun you want to talk about, adding wa to show that it is the topic, and give a statement about the topic. Watashi warolf Schmidt desu. I'm Rolf Schmidt. 2 desu A noun used with desu works as a predicate. desu indicates judgment or assertion. desu also conveys that the speaker is being polite towards the listener. desu inflects when the sentence is negative or in the past tense. 3 dewa arimasen dewa arimasen is the negative form of desu. Watashi wajack Schmidt dewa arimasen. I'm not Jack Schmidt. 2 N 1 no N 2 N 2 of N 1 no is used to connect two nouns. N 1 modifies N 2. Lesson 1 Grammar notes 3 -sansuffix added to a name -san is added to the name of the listener or a third person to show the speaker's respect for him/her. It should never be used with the speaker's own name. Ano kata wakim Miyoung-san desu. She is Ms. Kim Miyoung. When referring directly to the listener, the word ' anatayou' is not commonly used if you know the listener's name. The listener's family name followed by san is usually used. 4 N 1 wa N 2 desu kais N 1 N 2? 1Particle ka The particle ka is used to express the speaker's doubt, question, uncertainty, etc. A question is formed by simply adding ka to the end of the sentence. A question ends with a rising intonation. 2Question asking whether a statement is correct or not As mentioned above, a sentence becomes a question when ka is added to the end. The question thus made asks whether a statement is correct or not. Depending on whether you agree with the statement or not, your answer to such a question begins with Hai or Iie. Futjitsu no shain desu ka. Hai, soo desu. Iie, soo dewa arimasen. Is he/she a Fujitsu employee? Yes, he/she is. No, he/she isn't. 3Questions with interrogatives An interrogative replaces the part of the sentence that covers what you want to ask about. The word order does not change, and ka is added to the end. Ano kata wa donata desu ka. Ano kata wakim Miyoung-san desu. Who is that person? She is Ms. Kim Miyoung. 5 N motoo mo is added after a topic instead of wa when the statement about the topic is the same as the previous topic. Schmidt-san wa Fujitsu no shain desu. Kim-san mo Fujitsu no shain desu. Mr. Schmidt is a Fujitsu employee. Ms. Kim is a Fujitsu employee, too. 19
