Week 1 8/28 R Topics: Orientation/ Hiragana & Katakana Elementary Japanese I (Fall 2014) Japanese Language There are three types of characters: Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji (Chinese characters) for Japanese language. It is generally believed that Buddhist monks from the Kingdom of Baekje in Korea brought Chinese texts to Japan during the 5th century. Kanji, originated from pictures, are used for words or parts of words in the written Japanese. Approximately 2,000 Kanji are used on a regular basis. In addition, there are two sets of phonetic scripts, Hiragana and Katakana, both developed from Kanji. Both Hiragana and Katakana have 46 characters, including 5 vowels, 1 (syllabic) consonant, and 40 consonant and vowel combinations. Katakana is used for foreign words, names of foreign people and places, and sounds.
