23 Rethinking on the Irish Volunteers The purpose of this paper is to rethink activities, organisation and background of the Irish Volunteers (1913) as a movement of Irish political nationalism. Many scholars have tended to concentrate on the Easter Rising (1916) directed by Irish republicans rather than the Irish Volunteers on the research of Irish nationalism movement in the early 20 th century. But, in this case, it is important to study preconditions on the eve of the Easter Rising. In the 1910s, some impotent occasions, which were the armed movement (Ulster Volunteers Force) in Ulser directed by the Unionist / Conservative party and a change of Government in England with the declared object of deciding what all parties admit to be vital pol itical issues (Home Rule Bill) concerning Ireland, caused re-politicizing and re-organizing of Irish nationalist movement. In this paper, Eoin MacNeill and Bulmer Hobson were be focused as important figures of Irish cultural nationalists ( ). Because Eoin MacNeill who had been the architect, philosopher and organizer of Gaelic League was driven himself into political action as the founder of the Irish Volunteers in 1913, despite his emphasis on the voluntaristic nature of nationalities and his hatred of the standardization resulting from mass politics. And Bulmer Hobson was a substantial leader of Irish Republican Brotherhood (I.R.B) and organized substantially the Irish Volunteers, who was pulling the wires from behind.
