15 CASTAGNA Among the World s Greatest Syrahs Julian Castagna s wines hail from Beechworth, a granitous terroir at the foothiils of the cool Australian Alps. The site, directly in front of the Castagna home, is nurtured with biodynamic attention to detail. Applications, including cow skulls filled with manure, are applied to the ecosystem in the holistic belief that biodynamic rhythms encourage biodiversity, the foraging of the vine s root systems & a healthier, more balanced vineyard; not to mention a less wasteful world. This philosophy is to be admired for while its effects on the eventual wine are debatable, the world has never been solely about that which is provable by way of empirical process and diction. Wine is beautiful partly because of the abstract forces that allow it to speak differently each and every time we open a bottle. Once it ceases being so, I will find another job. Moreover, if tilling the land biodynamically allows one to sleep better at night and wake up each morning enthusiastic and optimistic about one s lot in the world, then I am all for it. At large the Castgna wines are effused with a richness honed by moreish and savoury notes of smoked meat, violet, five-spice & white pepper. Acidity is marked yet not shrill, while the tannins are svelte and ripe. These wines are among the finest expressions of Syrah in the world and we can thank the Japanese recession for this near vertical Castagna "Genesis" Syrah Beechworth カスターニャジェネシスシラー this wine boasts a palate weight very similar to the `02 although aromatically, the wine is more reminiscent of northern Rhone Syrah with finely tuned primary notes of violet, peat and blueberry. Expansive and formidably layered in the mouth, the wine is a structural parry of cut and thrust due to lacy tannins and bright acidity. Decant or die Castagna "Genesis" Syrah Beechworth カスターニャジェネシスシラー while tasting this, one of my trainees described the wine s soaring aromas as akin to a Turkish belly dancer! Indeed, this wine is an exotic elixir with a nose reminiscent of Turkish delight: musk and rose-scented water, in addition to heady Asian five-spice. The palate is looser than the `02 and `05, both more structural and corpulent, yet the wine s aromatic complexity and sappy length make for thrilling drinking Castagna "Sauvage" Beechworth カスターニャソヴァージュ unlike many producers of smoke-tainted and dried-out wines in Sonoma and other regions of northern California in `08, Julian declassified his crop in `03. Bushfire smoke was an issue throughout Victoria. Thus the change in name to Sauvage. Thankfully, judicious extraction and less oak than is usual sees a wine that remains fresh and highly drinkable although the hallmark notes of salami and cured meats are indeed reminiscent of a smokehouse! 2002 Castagna "Genesis" Syrah Beechworth カスターニャジェネシスシラー pure cool climate Syrah aromas of violet, meat and cracked pepper with a hint of soy from mid-term age. An extremely impressive vintage boasting a tight palate bound by juicy acidity and superbly melded tannins. Drink with meat and decant Castagna "Genesis" Syrah Beechworth カスターニャジェネシスシラー darker fruit spectrum with hints of liquorice and an almost Languedocienne hint of scrub and menthol. Forceful, long and attractively wild. 14

19 Cult I hesitate to use the term cult for this sub-list of wines because in many ways, it conjures up images of gargantuan, over-extracted wines in a sort of hyperbolic American idiom. Conversely, despite the precocious zeal throughout the mid-late 90 s for many overly worked & excessively ripe wines from South Australia in particular, Australia has quietly been making wines that reflect propitious sites, the oldest recognized vines in the world & perspicacious winemakers with vision beyond the disquiet currently rumpling Australia s vinous future. These wines continue to command high auction prices while others arrive to these shores in piddling quantities because they sell out in the world s finest restaurants. Thus, what else to call them but cult? Australia has always boasted judiciously crafted, elegant, highly ageable and in many instances, thoroughly understated wines from a multitude of regions. It is about time that they were brought to our attention. This is what this sub-list endeavours to do. Bannockburn Broad strokes of marzipan & truffle with underlying minerality from Geelong s maritime influence. One of the New World s finest Chardonnays & with plenty of life left in dem bones! 2000 Bannockburn S.R.H. Chardonnay Geelong バノックバーン S.R.H. シャルドネ Yarra Yerring A doyen of Australian wine founded Yara Yerring before dying while eating ice cream, his favourite food, a few years ago. Dr. Bailey Carrodus was a beloved English eccentric who immigrated to Australia as both a chemist & staunch believer in understated European styles of wine. He jiggled a bit here & there & in his endeavours to craft wines of place with a quintessentially Australian tang that strangely enough, were never particularly European in style despite many oft-used clichés suggesting otherwise. A good thing really because if one wants to drink European then it is simply better to do so! These wines more importantly, remain thoroughly drinkable, incredibly complex & superlative with age Yarra Yering Sangiovese Yarra ヤライェリングサンジョヴェーゼ 2001 Yarra Yering Dry Red No.1 Yarra ヤライェリングドライレッド No Yarra Yering "Under Hill" Shiraz Yarra ヤライェリングアンダーヒルシラーズ 2003 Yarra Yering Pinot Noir Yarra ヤライェリングピノノワール Sorrenberg I recall coveting this wine as a nineteen-year old during my first ever job in the wine world. Its charming, antiquated label seemed to say that the wine was not all about push & shove but something else; something beyond the Aussie zeitgeist at that time; and indeed it was. Sorrenberg remains one of my all time favourite wines. I consider it among the very top of the Australian hegemony and joke that when Barry Morey, the winemaker, chose to plant Gamay he chose an abstemious existence, etched from a love sewn by a less-than-fashionable grape! Be as it may, Barry knew what he was doing. The finest cru Beaujolais vineyards are planted in a similar clime to Beechworth and more importantly, on granite such as that which underlies Sorrenberg. A marvelous almost Pinot-like expression of Gamay that Jancis Robinson MW has often cited as among the most transparent expressions of the grape in the world. Yum! 2009 Sorrenberg Gamay Beechworth ソレンバーグガメイ Henschke This majestic wine hails from what is largely a single plot of the planet s oldest legally registered Syrah/Shiraz vines. Hill of Grace is arguably Australia s greatest wine. Why? Because Hill of Grace has always been about the voice of the land, one single blessed site in the highlands of the Eden Valley overseen by the blue stone of the neighbouring Lutheran church; at once of the ragged Australian scrub & eucalypt as of the German hands that hewed this land; the wine smacks of heritage beyond any other wine region outside of Europe. 20 Cult Giaconda Giaconda wines are made on meager volcanic remnants glistening with granite in the cool alpine sub-region of Beechworth. The wines are incredibly finessed with a meld of minerality & bright acidity balancing judiciously ripe fruit. Arguably, Giaconda s is the finest Chardonnay outside of Burgundy; while the Roussanne smacks of a basket of ripe apples & pears glowing in the sun; & the skeletal Pinot comes to life with air evoking wet leaf & carnal Autumnal aromas, gun smoke & peat 2004 Giaconda "Aeolia" Roussanne Beechworth ジャコンダエオリアルーサンヌ 2006 Giaconda Estate Chardonnay Beechworth ジャコンダエステートシャルドネ 2005 Giaconda "Nantua" Pinot Noir Beechworth ジャコンダナンチュアピノノワール 2004 Giaconda Warner Vinyard Shiraz Beechworth ジャコンダナンチュアワーナーヴィンヤードシラーズ Penfolds While the baton of grandeur was passed to newer, smaller & seemingly more artisan regimes with the balls-up of Fosters & the demise of Australia s once powerful branding machinery; Penfolds struck back! After all, many of its finest wines had always constituted skilful multi-regional blends & they remain as good as ever, its protagonists argued. While regionally specific wines have become a new focus for both Penfolds & Australia at large, Penfold s two finest wines remain Grange & Yattarna, aka White Grange Penfold's "Yattarna" Chardonnay Eden ペンフォールズヤッタルナシャルドネ Soaring aromas of white peach & nectarine tucked into a tightly wound yet suddenly explosive frame as the wine expands & undergoes a dramatic metamorphosis in the glass to secondary flavours of molten truffles & parmesan; make this a winner. Sourced mostly from vertiginous sites in the cool Adelaide Hills, Yattarna makes for a departure from the former white winemaking regime at Penfolds Penfold's "Grange" Barossa ペンフォールズグランジ Great vintage; memorable wine. The Other South Australians I may appear disillusioned at times by the muscle of South Australian wines but is only when this muscle per se, becomes an undrinkable quagmire of over-extracted fruit, clumsy oak & other additions. Here are some exceptions to the rule; all ridiculously highly rated & yet most importantly-especially as age tones down the intense fruit & spirituous aromas-gulpable. The Basket Press cuvees in particular are magnificent wines expressing generosity of spirit, sheer unbridled power & yet, incredibly, the complexity, texture and intensity bestowed by ancient vines in the right place in Australia.
