At the midnight release of the sixth book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, there was a big party at my local booksellers. I decided to go and join in the festivities. Hundreds of people jammed inside the spacious bookstore. Never in my life had I seen an American bookstore so crowded! here I saw costumed children and adults alike eagerly waiting in line. he staff greeted the customers and gave them a special wristband with a number. Although I had arrived soon after midnight, more than a hundred people had arrived before me thus earning them a spot closer to the head of the line. I didn t mind though; I enjoyed the anticipation. For me, it was thrilling book and it was fun to be around others who had discovered the same pleasure that I had. As I waited in line for my own copy, I heard children excitedly tell their parents that they were going to stay up all night to finish the book. his was pretty impressive considering that this book had 652 pages! Many book reviewers have written about the magic of Harry Potter. his series has the ability to transport us to a different world where people act very differently from the way that we do. 7 7 大 阪 好 きやねん [ 日 本 語 スピーチコンテスト ] 沈 連 姫 留 学 生 別 科 負 けたらあかん 負 けたらあかん 皆 さんも 一 度 はこの 歌 を 聞 いたことがあるでしょう 今 の 私 にはこの 言 葉 が 口 癖 になり 何 よりの 励 ましになっ ております そして この 言 葉 が 大 好 きです 今 年 の3 月 14 日 私 は 抱 え 切 れないほどの 希 望 と 期 待 に 胸 を 膨 らませながら 関 西 空 港 に 降 り 立 ちました そし て 私 の 大 阪 での 留 学 生 活 が 始 まったのです 中 国 で 日 本 語 一 級 試 験 に 合 格 し 通 訳 のアルバイトを 経 験 した 私 は 少 なくとも 日 本 の 留 学 生 活 の 中 では 日 本 語 で 困 ったりすることは まずないだろうとばかり 思 い 込 ん でいました しかし 日 本 での 初 会 話 が 年 なんぼ? 分 からへん? あかんわ 聞 きなれてない 大 阪 弁 に 驚 きつつ 固 まって しまいました 生 活 の 様 様 なところで 使 われる 大 阪 弁 私 が 習 ってきた 標 準 語 とはあまりにも 違 う 大 阪 弁 希 望 に 燃 えていた 私 は 絶 望 を 感 じ 日 本 での 生 活 に 少 しずつ 迷 い 始 めました この 大 阪 で 日 本 での 夢 を 実 現 できるのか 留 学 先 を 大 阪 にしたのは 本 当 に 賢 明 な 選 択 だったのか? 一 日 に 何 遍 も 何 遍 も 自 問 自 答 しました そしてある 日 偶 然 に 聞 いたこの 歌 負 けたらあかん 負 けたらあかん そう! 言 葉 に 負 けたらあかんわ! 負 けるもんか!と 自 分 に 言 い 聞 かせました それから 始 まった 私 の 生 活 空 間 その 隅 々が 日 本 語 の 教 室 でした 電 車 やレストランなど 公 共 場 所 では 他 人 の 会 話 に 耳 を 澄 ませ 小 さい 声 で 繰 り 返 してみたり 関 西 ローカルのバラエティ 番 組 を 録 画 して 大 阪 弁 を 真 似 して みたり 自 分 なりに 大 阪 になじむために 精 一 杯 努 力 しまし た アルバイトで 働 いていた 居 酒 屋 にはとても 明 るくて 元 気 で おしゃべり 好 きのお 姉 さんがいました そのお 姉 ちゃんは 暇 があれば 私 に 大 阪 の 面 白 いできことを 話 して くれました 時 々 間 違 った 大 阪 弁 を 教 えてくれたりもし ました ありがとうございます を あざーす と 教 え てもらい それも 大 阪 弁 だと 勘 違 いした 私 は お 客 様 にそ のまま あざーす! と 言 ってしまい 皆 を 笑 わせたこ ともあります その 小 さい 居 酒 屋 には 一 台 のテレビがあっ て 皆 で 野 球 を 観 ながら 食 事 ができるので 家 庭 的 温 かさ を 感 じられる 雰 囲 気 がありました 野 球 の 試 合 の 肝 心 な 場 面 では 皆 がお 箸 を 握 ったまま 固 まったり 試 合 に 負 けた 日 は 皆 が 一 緒 に 落 ち 込 んだり 勝 った 日 は 知 らないお 客 様 同 士 もお 互 い 抱 き 合 い 大 声 で 騒 いだりしました ちなみに 私 はその 居 酒 屋 の 雰 囲 気 が 沈 んでいたときも 盛 り 上 がって いたときも 大 好 きでした 皆 が 同 じ 気 持 ちになって 阪 神 タイガースを 応 援 する 大 阪 人 の 心 に 強 く 共 感 したのです 沈 連 姫 留 学 生 別 科 今 は 店 もなくなり 一 緒 に 働 いたそのお 姉 ちゃんにも 会 えませんが 辛 い 時 や 悲 しい 時 はその 時 の 感 動 を 思 いだ しながら 自 分 を 勇 気 づけています 私 の 目 に 映 る 大 阪 はいつも 人 情 があふれ 愛 情 いっぱ いに 包 まれています 体 は 肥 えて 声 は 大 きくても 知 ら ない 人 に 親 切 にできる 純 粋 できれいな 心 持 ちの 大 阪 おば ちゃん 頭 はパンチパーマで 怖 そうな 顔 をしていても 内 面 とてもまじめな 大 阪 のおっちゃん 商 業. 工 業 都 市 であ る 大 阪 で 激 しい 競 争 の 中 でも 明 るく 元 気 一 杯 で 頑 張 って いる 大 阪 サラリーマン.OL 達... 日 本 に 来 たばかりの 時 どうして 大 阪 に 来 たの? とよく 聞 かれて 大 阪 には 親 戚 がいるから としか 答 えられませんでしたが 今 なら 堂 々と 胸 を 張 って 大 阪 が 大 好 きだから! と 答 えられま す 最 近 私 自 身 も 少 しずつこの 大 阪 に 染 まってきていま す 大 声 で 値 引 き 交 渉 をしたり 大 阪 のおばちゃんを 真 似 して 自 転 車 に 日 傘 を 固 定 したり 大 阪 弁 が 口 をついて 出 た りするようになりました 水 の 都 商 人 の 街 大 阪 大 阪 にはあふれる 人 情 温 かい 心 持 ちの 大 阪 人 がいます そし て 親 しみのある 大 阪 弁 があります 私 はこのような 大 阪 人 が 大 好 きになり 大 阪 弁 が 大 好 きになり 大 阪 が 大 好 き になりました 大 阪 やっぱすきやねん! 以 上 でございます! おおきに! 8 Changing Career rends in Japan Yui Sasaki, Intensive nglish Program, 国 際 コミュニケーション 学 科 S U Yui Sasaki What do your parents do? Are you going to go into their business or get a different job from them after you graduate from school? In the past, young people used to follow in their parents footsteps or work at the same company until retirement. However, this Japanese traditional business style is changing are becoming more flexible day by day. It is convenient for young people to be furitas (temporary workers) or Ns (people not in employment, education or training) to get more freedom; on the other hand, it leads a serious problem for others. he first cause of furitas is that some young people prefer to earn enough money for themselve to enjoy just the present time without worrying about pension. Let s take an example of a Japanese bar s salary system. Kumi (not her real name) is a regular employee, and her basic salary is 183,340 yen per month even though N o t e : h i s e s s a y w a s adapted from the Final valuation Project this student completed as part of the Intensive nglish Program. he editorial policy is to preserve the integrity of the original, so no corrections have been made by the editorial staff. she works 12 hours almost every day. Also, she should pay a lot of insurance and tax from the salary. She is supposed to pay for health insurance 2,750 yen, unemployment insurance 1,527 yen, a travel reserve fund 4,500 yen, social gathering expense 1000 yen, broad 8,000 yen, and an income tax 6,350 yen, so she can get just 166,803 yen per month. In contrast, Yuri (not her real name) is a furita whose dream is to study in America next year, and her pay is 1,000 yen per an hour. She works about 8 hours in a day and five days a week, it means her salary is usually around 160,000 yen per month. So, she can make money to study abroad immediately. Paradoxically, it s clear that furitas can get a similar salary to regular workers without working the same hours. herefore, young people think it is more convenient to get money as a furita without paying a lot of tax. In addition, several experiences of some young people in social life cause increase the population of N. According to BBC NWS, While there were only 80,000 Ns in Japan in 1997, there were at least 400,000 in N has four characteristics: a Yankee type, a Staying indoor type, a Standing paralyzed type, and a Failure type. First, the Yankee type is just antisocial; in other words, they think now is everything, and they don t care about the sake of appearances. Next, people who stay indoors can t have a good relationship with people. For instance, some of them were bullied while they were students. A man named Gen Kubata states he had been bullied in junior high school and at work, so he had thought that was enough. hen he stopped having relationships in the society. hird, people who belong to the Standing paralyzed type think too seriously to get a position before they graduate from school; consequently, they miss the chance to get a secure job. Finally, the failure type of people can be employed at first, but they retire their job immediately because they lose their self-confidence. Indeed, these problems that young people might have in their lives made them part of Ns. hey are not only lazy people, but some episodes they have had interrupt them to get jobs in society. Now, we know the basic causes of furita and N. hen what kind of problems they bring about in the Japanese society? he two biggest effects are the growth of the national pension and the government s attempts to improve the situation. he first unforgettable effect is the increasing cost of the national pension which is used for welfare, and it benefits young people when they become older or people with disabilities. According to the national pension system, working Japanese people are supposed to pay 13,580 yen per month.
