2 Chinese Take Me Out by Julia Elbe translated by Tang Zixi Fei Cheng Wu Rao is a Chinese dating show based on the Australian show Take Me Out. The show consists of the host Meng Fei and judges Le Jia and Huang Han. Literally, Fei Cheng Wu Rao translates into if not sincere, do not disturb. The show is produced by Jiangsu Satellite Television and is the highest rated show for Jiansu TV. What exactly makes this show so popular? The premise is simple: there are 24 podiums arranged in a semi-circle. Behind every podium there is a woman. Every podium has a light which is initially switched on. The women all face a sort of catwalk, at the end of which the single male contestant appears. He is trying to win over at least one of their hearts. As soon as he goes on stage, the man chooses one of them as his heartbeat girl ( 心 动 女 生 ). This is based on nothing else other than the girl s appearance. His choice is only known to himself, Meng Fei and the viewers of the show. Now, 2-3 videos are shown of the man himself and of his friends, co-workers and/or family. In these videos, the man has a chance to share his interests, hobbies, talents, romantic history, etc. After a lot of controversy in previous years, topics such as his salary have become taboo. If he has other people in one of the videos, they often reveal funny or embarrassing anecdotes about him. In between the videos, the man, the judges, Meng Fei and the girls will often converse or exchange banter. At any point before the end of the last videos, the girls can switch off their light. This means that they have no interest in the man. Whenever a light is switched off, it is followed by a sound cue. Recently, a new feature has been introduced - the burst light ( 爆 灯 ). It can only be activated once per round and is also followed by a sound cue. Essentially, it is the opposite of switching off the light. When a girl bursts her light, she is showing a particular interest in the man. However, once she has burst her light she can no longer turn it off. Her light also changes into a pulsing heart display. The girl who bursts her light is automatically guaranteed a place as a finalist at the end of the round. There are several different outcomes to the show. If all 24 lights have been turned off before the end, the man is considered to have lost. If there is only one girl left, the man has two options. Either he can take her on a date, or thank her for her interest and leave alone. If there are two or more lights that have been left on (excluding, if relevant, the girl who activated the burst light), the man goes on stage and turns off lights until only two remain. These are the finalists. If there is any girl who activated the burst light, she is invited on the stage as a finalist. Now, the man s heartbeat girl is revealed. She too is invited on the stage as a finalist, if she is not already there. The man now asks the finalists a question that he chooses from a set selection of questions. The man can now either select one of the finalists or insist on his heartbeat girl. If the former is the case, he takes the hand of the finalist he wants to take on a date. If the latter is the case, he has a chance to try and convince her why she should go on a date with him. The girl can then either go on a date with him or reject him again, in which case the man departs alone. There are also reserve finalists sitting in the love corner ( 爱 转 角 ), which is located alongside the stage, right before the exit. If any of the reserve girls are interested in the man about to leave the studio (without a date), she can stop him by standing up. She can now briefly introduce herself to the man who can either decide to take her on a date or leave alone. At the end of the show, the man is interviewed. If he has been successful and got a date, she is then interviewed with him. If you want to watch the show yourself but do not have access to Jiansu TV channel, you can find several episodes on Youtube. 4 Osaka and the Single Traveller 大 阪 と 一 人 の 旅 人 by Anna Tattersall translated by Wako Togawa Having spent a year in this wonderful city, I want to share some of the best bits with you lovely people. These are just a few of the highlights that make Osaka the best city in Japan/ the world (although, granted, I am biased). Umeda Sky Building: Well worth a visit, especially in November and December, when the Christmas market pops up around the feet of the Umeda Sky Building. The Floating Garden Observatory stands at 170m and for 700 yen offers fantastic views of the Osaka skyline on clear days and nights - expect long queues and many obstructed photos at sunset though. The highlight is definitely the escalator to the doughnut-shaped observatory deck - you won t be able to describe this to people back home without a photo. Don t just take my word for it, visit Osaka! I though wouldn t recommend it to anyone who suffers from vertigo. Osaka castle and gardens: I m not going to lie to you here, but I never actually went to Osaka castle. I did mean to, I just never got round to it. It looks very impressive from the outside and the gardens are beautiful, especially the blossoming plum gardens in the spring, but I ve heard that it s not always worth paying the 600 yen to go inside. Depends how interested you are in castle-related museums though, I guess. Dotombori: I would be quite frankly disgusted with anyone who goes to Osaka and doesn t try the local cuisine for which the city earned the title Japan s Kitchen - go to Dotombori for takoyaki stands lining the river and okonomiyaki all-you-can-eat restaurants. (Accompanied with an all-you-can-drink, of course.) Expect to be accosted by street vendors and restaurant representatives in the evenings, and try not to be intimidated or drawn in by seeminglycheap deals! Prices generally increase Friday and Saturday. If you can, take the standard tourist photo of the running Glico man on Ebisu-bashi. Ameika-mura: an abundance of clothing and accessory shops for young people, ranging from quirky to downright outrageous (a furry backpack in the shape of a rocket, anyone?), interspersed with tiny little bars, takoyaki stalls and underground clubs. Ame-mura - yes I can call it this because I think I m kinda a local - is constantly buzzing and there are often performances in the sankaku-koen main square (opposite the shop Womb, which is also well worth a visit, if only to take a photo of the name). Also the streetlights look like people. What is 喜? It is joy; it is happiness; and above all, it is strength. Research shows that a whole-hearted laugh is equivalent to 6 doses of dolantin. According to traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), 喜 is one of the seven internal emotional elements 喜 怒 忧 思 悲 恐 惊 (joy, anger, worry, obsession, sorrow, fear, and terror), which are linked with six external elements (wind, cold, heat, wetness, dryness and fire). The balance between internal and external elements keeps one healthy. 喜 is an ideographic word. The upper part of the word is 鼓 (drum), and the lower part is 口 (mouth). The two parts together indicate that when people are happy, they beat drums and shout out their cheers. Like the rhythm in beating drums, one's body also has its own rhythm, and joy follows the rhythm of one's body, e.g. 喜 呕 speak out one's joy, 见 喜 toxins excreted from the body; sometimes fever is not even a bad thing as the heat brings out the infinitesimal traces of poison from the body. Joy is closely related to one's physical health. With joy, the air/energy goes smoothly inside the body. Joy in the tummy refers to one s preference to a certain food. When the food is taken with joy, it adds energy to the body, e.g. people in Sichuan favours spicy food, which helps to get rid of the dampness in that environment. Without joy, the air/energy will lack strength for circulation and movement, thus result in palpitation, heartache, insomnia, and poor memory. Too much joy damages the heart, as indicated in the four joys: rain after 10 years' dry weather, meeting hometown friends at alien place, wedding night for a monk and admission to be promoted. This kind of sudden overjoy might lead to health problems. In the next column, I will talk about 怒 (anger) and how anger affects one's health. Chinese New Year in Manchester by Julia Elbe Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival, is the most important festival in China. Celebrations start on the last day of the last month of the Chinese calendar and continue until the 15th of the first month. This is the day of the Lantern Festival, which officially ends the Chinese New Year celebrations. Every Chinese New Year will be the year of one of the 12 animals of the Chinese calendar. This Chinese New Year will be the year of the horse. While in China there is an abundance of celebrations over these days, anyone living in Manchester wishing they could experience these, or indeed any Chinese students wishing they could attend their New Year in their home country, may feel like their only option is to buy a plane ticket to China. This is not the case. While it may not have quite the same atmosphere as China, Manchester s China Town holds a range of event every year to celebrate the new year. This year they took place between the 30th of January and the 2nd of February. They included a food Market set up in St. Ann s Square, Chinese music and themed events in the Manchester Art Gallery, fireworks and a traditional Dragon Dance (using a 175 foot long dragon). Having attended these, I can only recommend them to anyone. The dance was fun to watch and there was an abundance of delicious, traditional food to buy at various different stands. The only thing to keep in mind is that China Town will be packed, especially on the day of the dance and that those wishing to view it should get there early to ensure getting a good spot. Also, it is important to remember that with so many people attending this festival getting around will be tricky. However, with so much excitement and culture to soak in, this is barely even noticeable. 5

6 Some Thoughts on the Railway Man レイルウェイ 運 命 の 旅 路 を 観 て 考 えたこと by Masashi Hoshino The first film I watched this year was The Railway Man (2013), a film based on the biography of Eric Lomax, an English veteran who was captured by the Japanese army at the end of the Pacific War and forced into labour on the Thai-Burma Railway. Lomax was tortured by the Japanese in the camp, and now suffers from PTSD caused by that experience. His most unforgivable adversary was Takashi Nagase, a young little man who worked as an interpreter during the torture. One day, Lomax is told that Nagase is still alive and working in a war museum in Burma. Lomax decides to visit him. When they meet, Lomax initially explodes in indignation, but eventually he sees that Nagase truly regrets his actions in the war and has suffered from a guilty conscience. Finally Lomax forgives Nagase, and they become best friends for the rest of their lives. It is a moving story, and undoubtedly significant in that it keeps alive the memory of the brutality of the Japanese army on the Thai-Burma Railway which is not widely recognized today, but as a film, it could be better. It seems to me that the connections between scenes in the present and the past are not effectively organized, thereby making the impression that the narrative of the whole film is somewhat inconsistent. The character of Nagase is not explored deeply, which makes me wonder why Lomax forgives this sly man (though it is partly because of my lack of knowledge of the factual context. After some research I got to know that the real Nagase spent his life making reconciliations for the war at the sacrifice of his own fortune). When it comes to stories of English war-prisoners captured by the Japanese army, I cannot help recalling Nagisa Oshima s film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983). This story of the English warprisoner Lawrence, who works as an interpreter in a Japanese war-camp, seems to represent the extremity of Japan s army more convincingly than The Railway Man does. In the last scene, after the war, Lawrence visits Sergeant Hara (Takeshi Kitano), waiting in a prison for his execution the following day. The smiling face of Hara, repeating Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, helps us grasp the lunacy in the war more successfully than the tears of Nagase. Could this little banal man with an innocent smile take part in such an atrocious war? The philosopher Hannah Arendt pointed out the banality of evil which governed the Holocaust. Totalitarianism is established by exploiting this kind of evil that resides in every ordinary person. The political situation in Japan since last autumn has confirmed the lasting significance of this concept. The government declared that they would keep secrets from the nation. The prime minister openly disregards history and calls for the abolition of the pacifist constitution. And yet, most Japanese people think they are living just ordinarily without any sense of responsibility. Whilst Akihabara is pretty great, Nakano is worth a visit too. Nakano is a city on the Chuo line and probably not somewhere tourists visit often, but close to the station is an anime fan s paradise. The shopping district Nakano Broadway is packed with anime and manga goods. The best part is that it s cheap because it s secondhand. Don t worry though, in Japan almost everything second-hand is in perfect condition. Actually, my favourite anime shop is Animate, but you can find those everywhere you go. In Tokyo, I think the best Animate is the one in Ikebukuro. For fans of JRock and Visual Kei: Osaka PURE SOUND PURE SOUND has shops in Osaka and Shinjuku, but the one in Osaka is more impressive, so I m 7 including it here, but you should visit both. In recent years, Japanese music, like anime, has become popular. Visual Kei is a style of music performed by bands wearing makeup, in elegant and sometimes shocking costumes. There are various genres in Visual Kei, but I think rock is particularly popular. The Osaka store is in the area of Amerikamura and is easily overlooked, but inside there are tons of band goods, clothing, CDs, DVDs, tour pamphlets, and more. It s a must-see for Visual Kei fans. Fashion and alternative lifestyle: Harajuku Harajuku is famous for fashion. Before going to Japan you ll probably at least know of Harajuku, but there are many shops and lots of small backstreets with great stores. However, not everybody knows about these shops, so I d like to tell you about my favourites. First up, Closet Child. Actually, my favourite branch of this shop is in Shinjuku, but the Harajuku branch is pretty good for Lolita style. Closet Child is at the top of a set of stairs, so be careful not to miss it. Also, be sure not to forget to visit the other branch of Closet Child in Harajuku that sells only CDs and DVDs. Next up is Kinji. Kinji is a shop selling used clothing. Everything is organized by colour, style, and so forth, so it s easy to browse. This is a tad unrelated, but everyone who works here is really cool. There s also ACDC RAG. This shop sells colourful and eye-catching clothing. The staff are friendly and the clothes are cheap and interesting. ACDC RAG is only located in Harajuku, but there are three stores, so it s best to visit all of them. Finally, I d like to recommend a tattooist. Not everyone wants to get one, but if you d like one whilst in Japan, please check out the studio Scratch Addiction. Yuya is talented and friendly, so there s no need to worry about visiting. The studio is in a back street, so be sure to check Google maps before going.

8 ANA Under Scrutiny Over Racial Stereotyping ANAのCMか 差 別 的 は? by Nick Lavin translated by Junya Sanda All Nippon Airways (ANA), a flagship Japanese airline, has come under criticism this week after the launch of its new advertising campaign in an aim to make the Japanese branch out into the world and become more globalised when it comes to their choice of holiday. The 30 second commercial shows two Japanese pilots standing in front of an airport observation-deck window, discussing recent ANA s business efforts to integrate Japan with the rest of the world. Speaking in English with Japanese subtitles, the two pilots are looking out of the observation window, when pilot A says, Haneda Airport has more international flights nowadays. Pilot B replies, Finally. Their conversation continues: Next stop, Vancouver. Next stop, Hanoi. Exciting, isn t it? Pilot B suddenly asks, Do you want a hug? Pilot A shows discomfort by the thought of showing public affection, to which Pilot B continues, Such a Japanese reaction. When Pilot A then explains, But I am Japanese, Pilot B then responds, I see. Let s change the image of Japanese people. Pilot A smiles broadly, nodding his head in agreement. Up to this point, the advertisement certainly seems to be fulfilling its goal to make ANA appear more globalised and encouraging its Japanese customers to embark on trips outside the comforts of Japan. However, after Pilot B suggests that they should change the image of Japanese people, Pilot A has attached a long strapped-on nose combined with a big, blond wig. It is because of the adornment of these features, which signifies a stereotypical foreigner/gaikokujin (i.e. a big nose and blond hair), which places ANA s advertising campaign under scrutiny, receiving hundreds of complaints from both inside and outside of Japan. Since the advertisement first aired, irate customers and foreigners living in Japan have taken to social networking sites to voice their issues with the commercial. Some customers have also vowed to take their business elsewhere because they were particularly offended by the advertisement. If you are a foreigner and have planned to come to #Japan do not cho[o]se an openly racist airline like #ANA! Watch their Japanese commercial!, on Twitter. Angela Fukutome posted on the company s Facebook page, I ve just seen the new ANA advert... Really? ANA thinks this is OK?! However, the opinion on whether the advertisement is racist or not seems rather divided as other Facebook and Twitter users seem to have found the humorous side to the advertisement and saw the commercial as poking fun at the typical nature of the Japanese. Peter tweeted, LOL at Japanese ANA racist ad - presume complainers have had humour by-pass? It s funny, people. Ryosei Nomura, a spokesperson for ANA, insisted that the aim of the advertisement was to express the importance of the upcoming international flights at Haneda and to urge Japanese to go out and see the world. Nomura then added, We have received opinions different from the message that we wished to convey. We will modify part of the advertisement and will release the second version soon. The advertisement has since been pulled from the airwaves and ANA is currently editing its advertisement campaign. Despite the sensation surrounding this one particular advertisement, it is certainly not the first to use the idea of the foreigner/gaikokujin as a medium for their publicity. Last year, Toshiba featured a Japanese girl speaking katakana Japanese, wearing a blond wig and a big nose for their advertising campaign for a bread-maker. In 2010, Nagasaki Prefecture promoted its foreign buildings showing Japanese tourists wearing, yet again, blond wigs and big noses. Novelty items, such as Haro gaijin san/ ハロ 外 人 さん which come with your own personal attachable nose and stickon blue eyes to complete the foreigner/ gaijn look can also be purchased from your local Tokyu Hands. Are these advertisement campaigns racist and discriminative towards foreigners? Or can all be forgiven when the matter of foreigner/gaijin and blond hair, blue eyes is viewed through the lens of comedy? At the same time, Chinese parents seem to have become more willing to send their children overseas to study, and the UK, with its high standard of education, increasingly attracts greater numbers of Chinese students. In 2012, 65,000 new students came from China, overtaking India as the No.1 source of international students in the UK. Even though there are so many of us here, do we, or even can we, integrate into British society? It is normal for us Chinese to be able to, for example, make local friends and to generally get along with British people, but still I think it is difficult to fully integrate. I wonder if it our reliance on other Chinese students, a Chinese circle, that is the main reason for this. Firstly, Chinese people s lifestyles and ways of thinking are generally more conservative, and as such, we are in many ways not easily able to get used to British social life. Taking drinking culture for example, Chinese people see alcohol as a catalyst for business negotiation and for breaking social barriers. However, for the British, drinking is a way to relax for the very reason that they enjoy drinking more (certainly in comparison to the Chinese), and so the preferred way to communicate is often through alcohol. Whereas British people may be more inclined to 9 drink at parties and clubs, Chinese people usually prefer to spend more time with familiar people round the dinner table or in a karaoke room. On top of this, Chinese students have also been raised from an early age in an environment of intense academic pressure and have become known for diligence when it comes to studying, programmed to sacrifice personal lives in order to prioritise studies. Our lack of individual interests, creativity and ability of independent thought further impedes our chances of integration. Finally, our lack of confidence in speaking English is yet another factor in the failure to assimilate more. Although the importance of an English language education is very much stressed in China, with even a growing number of nurseries offering classes, Chinese-style English education only teaches the skills to pass exams and not the ability to actually communicate. We may be able to pass exam with flying colours, but once in the UK we find that the English for exams and the English for real-life communication are poles apart. Maybe the Chinese saying laoxiang jiàn laoxiang, liang yanlèi wangwang (roughly translated as tears flow when the fellow townsmen meet ) is a testament to why us nomadic Chinese stay within Chinese circles: it is a search for a sense of belonging. In my opinion, only by first developing interests and hobbies, and by joining university societies, which helps in expanding social networks, can the reliance on this Chinese circle be overcome. Though a prerequisite to integration is learning the self-confidence to communicate in English, meeting new people, a way in which a respect and acceptance of different cultures is gained, may be one of the first steps out of this circle.

10 ボストンキャリアフォーラム Boston Career Forum by Joy Liao キャリアフォラムとは 日 本 で 就 職 したい 外 国 人 留 学 生 や 留 学 中 の 日 本 人 の 為 に 二 日 三 日 で 会 社 説 明 会 や 面 接 などを 行 ったイベントで す 去 年 の 場 所 は スウェーデン コンドン 東 京 ボストン ニューヨーク ロサンゼルス で 行 いました 私 は 2013 年 11 月 のボス トンキャリアフォーラムに 参 加 しました ちょ っと 遅 れましたが 参 加 後 の 感 想 文 をここでみ んなに 教 えたいと 思 います ボストンキャリア フォーラムへ 来 た 企 業 は 大 手 企 業 でもあり 中 小 企 業 でもあり 合 計 209 社 でした ボストン 行 く 前 によく 友 達 に 聞 かれた 質 問 は え?なん でわざわざイギリスからいくの? です 確 か に わざわざイギリスから 行 かなくてもいいで す しかし 今 まで 就 活 (しゅうかつ)もやっ た 事 がないので 経 験 として 就 職 活 動 とは 何 か を 知 りたかったということで 行 ってきました 二 ヶ 月 から 企 業 について 調 べたり エントリー シートや 履 歴 書 を 書 いたりして 4つ 会 社 から 面 接 を 頂 きました 当 日 会 場 に 入 った 瞬 間 すごいなあと 思 いました ボストンキャリアフ ォーラムは 一 番 大 きなイベントで 参 加 企 業 数 も 一 番 多 いらしいです もちろん 日 本 人 と 外 国 人 留 学 生 参 加 者 の 数 も 半 端 ないでした 9 時 に なった 時 すべての 学 生 が 勢 いに 自 分 の 会 社 や テーフルを 探 し 履 歴 書 や 面 接 の 練 習 をしまし た 私 は その 光 景 に 驚 いて 五 分 くらい 立 ち 止 ましたが 自 分 がやらなきゃいけないとこがあ ると 思 ったらやる 気 が 出 ました 午 前 自 分 の 名 札 をもらったり 様 々な 会 社 のブーズに 回 っ て 説 明 会 を 聞 いたり パンフレットをもったり しました 午 後 は 決 めた 時 間 に 面 接 を 受 けま した 三 日 間 でこのような 繰 り 返 しでした 結 局 すべての 面 接 が 落 ちました やはり 最 初 か らの 準 備 がたりなかったと 思 いました キャリ アフォラムで 学 んだ 事 は 自 分 はどのような 人 かをちゃんと 自 分 で 考 えた 方 がいいということ です 自 分 のことが 分 かっているからこそ 自 分 の 将 来 へのビジョンに 合 う 会 社 が 探 せると 思 います また 六 月 にロンドンキャリアフォラ ムがあるので 私 も 行 くつもりです ぜひ 一 緒 に 行 きましょうね^^ A career forum is a job hunting event held by companies who run information sessions and interviews for both Japanese and international students who want to work in Japan. These forums take place in Sweden, New York, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Boston, and London. I went to the Boston Career Forum, which is the biggest one and has the highest number of companies, in November It seems like a long time ago, but I still want to tell everyone who is interested in working in Japan about my feelings after the event. Before I went to Boston, most of my friends asked me: Why do you want to go all the way to Boston from the It s true that I actually didn t have to go all the way to Boston to just find a job, but as I d never been to any career forums before, I thought it would be a great experience to know what exactly Japanese job hunting is like. I spent two months writing Japanese resumes and researching about the companies before the event. Luckily, I got four interviews out of ten companies. On the day of the event, I was astonished by the sight of tons of Japanese and international students were running to the company booths they liked, trying so hard to practice what to say in their interviews, and writing pages of resumes. I stood there for a few minutes because of that very view. Then, I realised I was one of them as well, so I went to collect brochures, reviewed my resume, and tried to practice my interviews. My schedule for three days was like this: collecting brochures and attending company information sessions in the morning, then having interviews with companies in the afternoon. As a result, I was not able to pass any interviews for any company. Even though I failed the interviews, I tried my best to participate in this event. I was exhausted when I got back to Manchester. However, I learned that knowing WHO YOU ARE is really important, because you will know which company is more suitable for you. Anyways, I am going to the London Career Forum again this June. The surprising thing is that on Valentine's Day the gift giving is only done by women. The first gift is chocolate which is given by the woman to the man that she loves. The chocolate which is 10 given to the man is called "Honmei-choco" The second gift, "Giri-choco" is typically sent to bosses, work colleagues or male friends in the woman's life. This second gift giving relates to the Japanese view that "If someone does you a favour, then you feel obligated to do something for that person." It is said that chocolate companies sell more than half of their annual sales in the week before Valentine's Day. A month later an event known as White Day takes place. On this day the men who received chocolates on Valentine's Day are expected to make a return gift. However the gifts that the men give are typically more expensive.unlike in England, Japanese women will give their friends a gift called "Tomo-choco."I think the way in which Valentine's Day is celebrated in Japan is very interesting.

11 日 本 政 府 は 日 本 のグロス ナショナル クールを 増 やすことができますか? Can Japan Raise its Gross National Cool? by Kimberley Morgan With the ageing population and declining birth rate doing nothing to help the already stagnant economy, the Japanese government is searching for new ways to increase the country s economic power. One of the measures the government has decided to take is to invest an extraordinary amount of money 50 billion yen, into an initiative named Cool Japan. The name alone may give a rough idea of what this policy aims to achieve, which is essentially to make Japan seen as cool overseas and bring a financial gain at the same time. This campaign covers everything from the likes of anime and manga to sushi, sumo and Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. This scheme is particularly targeting small to medium sized businesses that sell high quality and attractive products yet don t have international business capabilities. However, the potential benefits of Cool Japan are far from just economic. Take South Korea, for example. The recent Korean Wave, whereby Korean media has become a dominant force in Asia, has had far-reaching effects for the country. While Korean manufacturers used to try to hide made in Korea labels, they are now a selling point, and are displayed with pride. Korean products are seen as modern, cool and stylish. Furthermore, despite a w h o l e array of political issues with Japan such as the on-going history textbook debate, Japanese people s positive feelings towards their Korean neighbours reached a record high. And in countries as varied as Russia, India, China and France perceptions of South Korea are rising year on year. The power of cultural attractiveness is a form of soft power, which many believe is the key to successful international relations. But can Japan really emulate the success of Korea with its Cool Japan strategy? As anyone who has ever tried to watch a Japanese drama or music video on Youtube is no doubt aware, Japanese companies relish removing videos that violate copyright. Compare this to Korean media, which, for better or worse is readily available across the internet. Not only that, for Japan to be seen as cool overseas, it isn t as simple as the Japanese government announcing to the world that Japan is, in fact, cool. Although the potential impact of a positive image of Japan overseas is vast, it s rather difficult to intentionally try to convince people that they should be interested in Japanese culture.
