4 Interactive Terrain Generation in a Virtual Environment 3 Ryutarou Morimoto Abstract 3-D terrain models are required for virtual environments, movies, TV programs, video games and so on. Therefore, there is a need for a modeling system that can easily generate arbitrary terrain models. This paper presents an immersive modeling system for generating 3-D terrain models of mountain scenery. The system satises these demands. In the proposed system, users can design 3-D terrain shapes by drawing an outline of terrain on a -D plane of a slopedrear-projection display, pulling a mountaintop in 3-D space andregulating the slope of the mountain generated. As a result, complicatedarbitrary terrain models are easily andeciently generatedby repeating these intuitive operations. Keywords: virtual reality, immersive modeling system, terrain generation, interactive modeling 3 Master's Thesis, Department of Information Systems, Graduate School of Information Science, Nara Institute of Science andtechnology, NAIST-IS-MT , February 9, 001. ii
