11 ISDT International Science Development Team TMT TMT 10 1 TMT.OPS.TEC REL01 TMT Operations Plan Nobunari Kashikawa TMTJ Project Office, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, Osawa, Mitaka, Tokyo , Japan Abstract: The main purposes of TMT operations are to maintain the Observatory to run nightly at peak performance, to support efficient observations for astronomers from the partnership. TMT will initially have two observing modes: PI-Directed Mode each PI operates the instruments and executes the observations and has direct control of real-time decision making. Pre-Planned Queue Service Observing TMT staff members execute pre-defined observations on behalf of PIs in a queued sequence. Most science observations with the TMT will be carried out remotely; either from the sea-level TMT Headquarters or from remote observing centers in the partner countries. Observing time allocation will be the responsibility of each partner organization and partners will each establish and operate their own observing proposal and assessment processes. All data obtained with the TMT instruments will be stored indefinitely along with meta-data describing weather conditions and the state of many telescope and instrument AO parameters calibration data required for subsequent engineering and scientific analysis. A nominal 18 month proprietary period is planned for science data. Instruments will be delivered with standard data reduction software pipelines and observation simulators. The TMT Headquarter facility will be located in Hilo with an open-plan style of office seating for 120 staff. 619
