3 173 フンボルト理念とは神話だったのかパレチェク仮説との対話潮木守一問題の所在多くの大学史の教科書は 1810年のベルリン大学の発足をもって近代的な大学の始まりだと説いているところでベルリン大学はそれ以前の大学とはどのような違いを持ちいかなる独自性を持っていたのだろうかさらにまたベルリン大学の創設に大きな影響力を発揮したのは当時の政治家高級官僚言語学者プロイセン内務省の文教局長であったウィルヘルムフォンフンボルトであったというそのことからベルリン大学の創設それにともなう大学改革をリードしたのはフンボルト理念だったというそしてこのフンボルト理念が19世紀のドイツの大学をリードしそれが19世紀後半から20世紀初頭にかけてドイツの学問を世界最先端の水準にまで押し上げた原動力だったと説いているところでそもそもフンボルト理念とは具体的にはどのような構想だったのだろうかこうしたフンボルト理念説は現在では日本ばかりでなく広く世界各国で通説となりほとんどの大学史の著作の中で繰り返されているところが近年に至りフライブルク大学パレチェク教授 Paletschek, Sylvia によってフンボルト理念神話説が主張されるようになった1 これは広く世界中に広まった大学史記述に対する根源的な挑戦であり既成の定説に修正を迫る野心的な企てであるただかねてからそういう兆しがまったくなかったわけではないたとえばベンダヴィドは 19世紀初頭の哲学者達の唱えた理念論はいずれも抽象的な観念論に過ぎずその理念がドイツの学問をリードしたことはないむしろ19世紀後半に始まったドイツでの科学革命はフンボルト達の構想に対する反逆から生じたとしてきた2 果たしてフンボルト理念は実在したのかそれはどのような影響力を持っていたのかこのテーマはいつの日かは実証的な検証に付されるべき課題としてこれまであったこのパレチェクの論は筆者がこれまで行ってきた一連の研究と密接に関係している筆者はこれまで筆者なりの解釈を提起してきたがこうした論が登場した現在筆者は筆者なりの論点整理が必要となったそこで本論文では上記の研究成果との対話を通じて筆者なりの整理を試みることとするまずパレチェクの主張する論点を要約するならばこうなるヴィルヘルムフォンフンボルトの大学構想は 19世紀を通じて誰もその存在を知らずフンボルト理念ベルリンモデルといっ桜美林大学招聘教授

17 A Japanese Perspective of the Humboldt s Mythos Morikazu USHIOGI Most standard textbooks pertaining to the world history of universities describe the establishment of the University of Berlin in 1810 as the beginning of the modern university and Humboldt s idea of the University of Berlin as the leading example of a modern research university. Sylvia Paletschek questioned the abovementioned description and asserted that Humboldt s idea and the Berliner model were a result of the University of Berlin s centenary celebrations in As evidence for her assertion, she argues that nobody was aware of the existence of Humboldt s manuscript on internal and external structure of the higher learning institution in Berlin until 1903 and that it lay, unknown to anyone, amidst a bundle of papers. At the turn of the nineteenth century, Japan sent many young scholars to Germany to study the training system of science and scholarship. Some of them returned home and attempted to implement the German training style by establishing the seminar system based on the principle of the training through research. Professor Yoshito Takane, after studying in Berlin from 1896 to 1900, attempted to introduce the German style of training at Kyoto Imperial University, albeit without the explanation that the new training system was based on Humboldt s idea and the Berliner model. Professor Tokuzou Hukuda, who completed his doctorate from Munich University and studied alongside Lujo Brentano, also attempted to introduce the German style of training; however, he never mentioned Humboldt s idea and the Berliner model. Moreover, Heinrich Waentig, a guest professor from Germany who taught at the Tokyo Imperial University from 1909 to 1913, published a reform plan for the training of economics and began seminar training; however, he never mentioned Humboldt s idea and the Berliner model. According to my research, thus far, the only mention of Humboldt s idea and the Berliner model has been in an essay in Taiyo on June 1, 1913 in which the outline of Eduard Spranger s speech was published and in an editorial of Yorozuchono on September 22, 1913; both were leading magazines at the time. This suggests that before 1913, several experimental teaching based on the German style by professors trained in Germany were attempted without the mention of Humboldt s idea and the Berliner model. However, after 1913, in Japan, there were frequent discourses on Humboldt s idea and the Berliner model and many standard textbooks pertaining to the history of universities have described these two concepts. In other words, until 1913, the name of Humboldt was unknown to the Japanese and there were no conversations on the Berliner model. This fact could, to some extent, bear testimony to Paletschek s assumption. Guest Professor, Obirin University
