1 Northern California Koyasan Temple 1400 U St., Sacramento, CA SEPTEMBER 2012 NEWSLETTER Obon Every year we have Obon services in July and August to honor our deceased loved ones, but where does the word Obon come from and what does it mean? Obon is a shortened version of Ullambana ( Urabon Kyo in Japanese) and originated from the story about Maugalyayana (Mokuren in Japanese). Mokuren was one of Sakyamuni Buddha s ten great disciples and the foremost in supernatural powers, giving him the ability to speak with ghosts. Using this ability, he was able to speak with his deceased mother and discovered she had fallen into the Realm of Hungry Ghosts and was suffering. Wanting to free her from this suffering, Mokuren asked Buddha how he could free her from this realm. Buddha told Mokuren that he alone would not be able to rescue her, so he instructed him to offer food, on the 15 th day of the seventh month, to the many monks who had just finished their summer retreat. The merits of this action would rescue his mother. Once this was done, Mokuren s mother was released from her suffering. The Urabon Sutra further describes the conditions of hell and paradise. Hell (Jigoku) is described as having three sufferings: Fire The pain of being burned by fire. Blood The blood bath that results when the strong prey upon the weak. Sword The pain of being cut by swords. Paradise (Gokulaku) or the Pure Land is described as offering to others, thus receiving great happiness, and resulting in a peaceful and harmonious world. The word obon also means a tray to carry offerings to others. The offerings are not only for Buddha but also deceased people and everybody in this life. As Buddhists, our efforts to eliminate suffering and granting joy moves us closer to the Pure Land. Let us live in the Pure Land in this very life. With Gassho, Reverend Myokyo Coy Autumn Higan and Eitaikyo Services The Temple will observe the Autumn Higan Memorial Service on Sunday, September 16, The English service begins at 10:00 a.m., followed by the Buddhist Study Class at 11:00 a.m. The Higan service will start at 1:30 p.m. The autumn Higan is a time when we remember those who have passed on and pay our respects to them. The Temple will observe its annual Eitaikyo Service on Sunday, October 21, The English service begins at 10:00 a.m., followed by the Buddhist Study Class at 11:00 a.m. The Eitaikyo service will start at 1:30 p.m. Eitaikyo is the perpetual prayer for those who have passed on. Services begin at 1:30 p.m. The following are the dates for the September and October services: September 30, 2012 Bato-Kannon (Horse Head Avalokitesvara) blessing for living and memorial for deceased pets. Service application forms must be received by the Temple the Thursday (September 27, 2012) before the service. October 28, 2012 Benzai-ten (Sarasvati) blessing for prosperity in the fields of art, music, entertainment, writing, broadcasting, general business, etc. Service application forms must be received by the Temple the Thursday (October 25, 2012) before the service. [Note: Service application forms are available on-line (in pdf format) at the Temple s website: Autumn Pancake Breakfast The Temple will hold it Autumn Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, October 7, 2012, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Adult tickets are $5.00 and a child s plate is $4.00. Baked pies, including our award-winning apple blueberry, and other goodies will also be on sale that day. The Temple is short-handed and we ask all able members to come and help out for this event. Please bring your family and friends for this worthy cause. [Note: Depending on the progress of the Temple s kitchen remodel project, this event may be postponed.] Fall Sumi-e Class The Fall Sumi-e (Japanese brush painting) class, to be conducted by Rev. Fukuda, will begin on Wednesday, September 12, This is a 10-week class, held on Wednesdays. Afternoon sessions run from 3:00 4:30 p.m., or if that time is not convenient for you, the evening sessions run from 7:00 8:30 p.m. The cost for the entire 10-week class is $ Please contact Rev. Our deepest condolences to the family of: Sam Masashi Imoto ~ March 23, 1917 June 12, 2012 The eldest son of Shohei and Moto Imoto, Sam was the former head of the Petaluma Daishiko (during the 1970 s and 80 s). He and his wife, Mabel, went on several pilgrimages to Japan with the Northern California Koyasan Temple. He is survived by his sons John, David and Robert, and grandchildren Jolyn, Jared and Michael. September 2012 Page 2

Toro-nagashi Ritual at William Land Park The 34th annual Toro-nagashi ritual and picnic was held on Sunday, August 19, 2012, at William Land Park in Sacramento.

Attendees enjoyed the various potluck foods that were shared as well as the wonderful entertainment provided by the Koyasan Taiko Group.

3 Northern California Koyasan Temple SEPTEMBER 2012 NEWSLETTER 1400 U St., Sacramento, CA Helen Taniguchi ~ July 13, 1921 August 28, 2012 Helen was an active and life-long Temple member and served as the Board s recording secretary for many, many years. She also served as the Fujinkai s treasurer during the late 1980 s. Helen is survived by her husband Mitsuo John, daughters Eleanor and Catherine, son Mark, and grandchildren Alison, Diana, Christopher, Shannon and Russell. During the service, the lanterns were released into the water for all to observe and to pay their respects. To see more pictures from this service, please visit our website at Koyasan Taiko Group Performances The Koyasan Spirit of Children Taiko group had two performances in the month of August. On Saturday, August 11th, the group performed at the Sacramento Buddhist Church s 66th Annual Bazaar. Each year the group opens the bazaar s entertainment program, stated Kaori Kubota-Sakauye, the group s lead instructor, It was a very hot day but by the time of the performance, the bazaar was crowded and we had an enthusiastic audience. The 17-member group played seven songs which were well received, and they also received some inquiries for future performances. On August 19th, the group performed at the Temple s annual Toro-nagashi Ritual held at William Land Park. The group enjoys having the potluck picnic with church members every year, said instructor Kaori Kubota-Sakauye. This year we had many new taiko students in attendance, and we performed five songs for the audience. One of the songs was performed by the beginner students who started lessons in June. They did a wonderful job. Many taiko members stayed for the Toro-nagashi Ritual and learned the meaning of this very special service. September 2012 Page 3

Helen was an active member of the Temple and the Fujinkai, and will be greatly missed by the entire congregation. The Fujinkai also wishes to express its sincere gratitude to Mrs.

August Fujinkai Workshop: The August sushi making workshop was well attended, and the Fujinkai extends a big THANK YOU to Fusako Takahashi and her assistant, Toshi Kobata, for teaching us how to make

Helen was an active member of the Temple and the Fujinkai, and will be greatly missed by the entire congregation. The Fujinkai also wishes to express its sincere gratitude to Mrs. Sumiko Taniguchi for her $35 donation and to Mr. & Mrs. David Imoto for their $100 donation in memory of Sam Imoto. August Fujinkai Workshop: The August sushi making workshop was well attended, and the Fujinkai extends a big THANK YOU to Fusako Takahashi and her assistant, Toshi Kobata, for teaching us how to make delicious makizushi and California rolls. Hatsue Graham taught us how to make inari (age) sushi. It was a fun afternoon with delicious sushi tasting to end the workshop! November Fujinkai Workshop: The next Fujinkai workshop will teach you how to decorate this beautiful Sushi Cake! The workshop is scheduled for Saturday, November 3, 2012, to be held in the Temple s Social Hall and will run from 1:00 3:00 p.m. Iky Kawano will be the instructor for this the workshop. As a result, the Temple is soliciting recipes from its members to compile a new cookbook. We are looking for all types of recipes, including ones for children.
