Senryu is a short poem written in three lines composed of 5, 7 and 5 syllables, but unlike haiku, it does not need to contain a word that denotes the season. The winning entries include a senryu that expresses the grief of developing a middle-aged spread in reference to the Nobel Award that was a hot topic last year, and one that expresses a play on the lyrics to the Yokai Watch animation song. Coming in at 10th place was a unique poem that reads, Judenki / attara iina / ningenyo (battery charger / I wish I had one, too / to charge myself). [The winning entries are shown on the back cover] Society Enforcement of the Revised Road Traffic Law: Be Sure to Observe Bicycle Rules The Road Traffic Law was revised and put into force on June 1 st. Cyclists who are caught for reckless cycling will now be required to take a safety course. This new requirement applies to all cyclists over the age of 14 who are charged more than twice within a three-year period for any one of 14 dangerous acts, such as failing to stop at intersections where required, ignoring traffic lights, and causing an accident while riding a bicycle and using a smartphone at the same time. The mandatory safety course lasts three hours and costs 5,700 yen. According to the National Police Agency, there were 109,269 accidents involving bicycles throughout Japan in 2014, accounting for roughly 20% of all traffic accidents. Of these accidents, 82 were fatal accidents, marking a 60% increase compared to 10 years ago. Topic Panda Twins Thriving in Wakayama Twin female giant panda cubs Ohin (older cub) and Tohin (younger cub), who were born last December at the Adventure World amusement park in Shirahama City, Wakayama Prefecture, celebrated their 6-month birthday with an event held at the park on June 2 nd. 3 Culture Extremely Valuable Discovery of Dotaku Bells in Awajishima The seven dotaku bells that were found in Minami-Awaji City (Awajishima), Hyogo Prefecture, are estimated to date from the end of the early-yayoi Period to the beginning of the mid-yayoi Period (third century B.C. to second century B.C.). To date, there have only been two other instances throughout Japan in which dotaku bells and bronze clappers for ringing the bells were discovered together. The bells and clappers have been preserved in good condition, and are considered an extremely valuable discovery by Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, which is cooperating in the examination. The seven dotaku were unearthed between April 8 and 23 from a sand mound in a gravel processing plant. They range in height from 22.4 to 31.8 centimeters. The discovery was made by Mr. Toru Nishida, 51, an operator at the plant who had been shoveling sand using an excavator at the time. I ve seen these objects in history textbooks. What are they doing here? he wondered. It is believed that they were initially small, had a handle, and were rung like a bell as an instrument, but were gradually made larger and became an object for decoration. The dotaku that were recently discovered are thought to be the oldest type. There have been cases in the past where a large number of dotaku bells have been unearthed from a single site. 4 Information on Technical Intern Training 技能 じっ ゅうじょう ほう 実習情報 Natural Disasters and Countermeasures ぜんさいがいたいさくと対策について 自然災害 In Japan, the months from July to October see an increasing number of typhoons that approach or make landfall, and also mark a period of increased risk of heavy rains, floods, storms and tornadoes. Heavy rains at times induce river flooding, mudslides and landslides, and doubly expose local residents to danger every year. Moreover, Japan is a country of frequent earthquakes. The recent intensification of volcanic activity throughout Japan is also inducing many of the tremors. Those of you technical intern trainees who are not familiar with Japan s natural climate should prepare for such natural disasters by discussing what to do with a lifestyle mentor familiar with local affairs in your community. September 1 st is designated Disaster Prevention Day in Japan, in commemoration of the devastating Great Kanto Earthquake that occurred on this day in 1923, and taking into account that September is typhoon season. Secure your own safety before all else. When an earthquake occurs, or you receive an emergency earthquake warning, take action to secure your own safety before all else, such as by protecting your head and taking cover under a sturdy table. Actions to take immediately once the initial tremor stops Remain calm, check all sources of fire and put out any open flames. Even if you have been using an open flame, take action to secure your own safety before all else. Then put out the flame without panicking. (There is no need to panic, as most gas facilities are equipped with an automatic gas shut-off function.) If a fire breaks out, calmly extinguish it. Acting in a panic could lead to injury. Be careful of furniture that has toppled or fallen and shards of broken glass. Do not rush outside, as there may be falling objects, such as roof tiles, window glass and signboards. Open windows and doors to secure an exit. Secure a way out, as doors and windows may later become skewed and unable to open. Move away from gates and fences. If you are outside when an earthquake hits, move away from concrete fences, as they may collapse. Actions to take after an earthquake Take shelter from fires and tsunami. Large fires may break out. 5 danger, go to a temporary refuge area or evacuation center for safety. In coastal areas, if you feel a large jolt or if a tsunami warning is issued, quickly evacuate to higher ground or other safe area. Take proper action based on accurate information. In times of disaster, people tend to be misled by false rumors. Obtain accurate information from reliable sources such as the radio, TV, fire department and government offices. Cooperate in aiding and rescuing each other. Mutually confirm each other s safety. Cooperate with your neighbors in rescuing and aiding people who are trapped in collapsed homes or under fallen furniture. When evacuating your home, turn off the circuit breaker and shut off the gas at the main valve. [Heavy Rains, Typhoons and Tornadoes] Obtain accurate information. The Japan Meteorological Agency issues weather information, and announces an emergency warning when the danger of a serious disaster increases substantially, a warning when there is a risk of a serious disaster, and an advisory when there is a risk of a disaster. These warnings and advisories are announced with respect to each municipality, and municipalities that receive them issue evacuation orders and directives as necessary. Evacuation When an evacuation order or directive is issued by your municipality, promptly evacuate to a safe area via a safe route. As river flooding and landslides could occur suddenly, a moment s delay could be life-threatening. Also note that it is extremely dangerous to evacuate after the weather becomes stormy. Tornadoes As a tornado occurs accompanying the movement of a typhoon or other strong wind movement, the Japan Meteorological Agency announces weather information and thunderstorm advisories when it predicts the possibility of a tornado, and issues a tornado watch when a tornado becomes imminent. When a tornado watch is issued, pay heed to the sky around you. Mentaiko (Spicy Cod Roe) Pasta た食 つくべよう! 作 ゅんろう! 旬 めんたいこぱすた明太子パスタ あじ の味 [Ingredients (1 serving)] 100g dry pasta 1 sac of mentaiko 10g butter 2 green shiso (perilla) leaves Soy sauce [Preparation] 1.Boil water in a pot, and cook the pasta for the amount of time indicated on the package. 2.Cut open the cod roe sac and remove the roe. 3.Put the roe, butter and soy sauce in a bowl and mix well. 4.Immediately drain the pasta when it is cooked, and toss it in the bowl of sauce mentioned in 3. 5.Serve on a plate, and sprinkle with chopped shiso leaves The hot season has come. On hot days, don t you feel like eating something hot and spicy, as though not to give in to the heat? Japan, however, is not a country of hot and spicy foods like many other Asian countries. We are not sure why this is so, but it might be related to Japan s climate or to the national character of the Japanese people who prefer moderation in most things. Even so, there are a number of hot and spicy foods in Japan. Representative of these is mentaiko (spicy cod roe; also called karashi-mentaiko or mentai), which is cod roe soaked in hot pepper. Granted, it is not a food that has existed since ancient times in Japan; it is said that a similar food that originated on the Korean Peninsula was arranged in Japanese style after being introduced to Japan. Nevertheless, mentaiko has been well known as a specialty of the Hakata region in Kyushu for the past 50 years at least. Pasta is an Italian dish, but mentaiko pasta, which we introduce here, uses mentaiko to make the pasta sauce, and is widely accepted today as a Japanese dish. The Italian people might raise their eyebrows at this dish, but the invention of the exquisite combination of mentaiko and pasta shows the very essence of the Japanese people, don t you think? The green shiso leaf that is sprinkled on the dish is a plant that belongs to the Lamiaceae family, and is also called aojiso or ohba. In olden days, it was used as a medicinal herb. Its characteristic flavor goes well with many Japanese dishes, and it comes into season around this time of year, so go ahead and sprinkle as much as you like. It introduces the daily activities of technical intern trainees through photographs received from members of supervising and implementing organizations. The text is written in Japanese, but the site mainly features photos, so you might like to have a glimpse of some of the activities of technical intern trainees throughout Japan who spend their days like yourself, hard at work. In addition to photos of technical intern training and seminar sessions, it also includes photos of technical intern trainees participating in local events. There is an especially large number of photos of barbecue parties and photos taken at travel destinations, which might give you some ideas for planning your own recreational events. You might be saying, I took part in a local event, too! or I participated in a company outing! If you have something to share, send us a photo! Before you do, however, be sure to get the consent of everyone in the photo (some photos may not be able to be posted due to portrait rights, etc.).
