For example, intensive summer school at TUFS, learning abroad and joint online learning, and joint study tour, etc. Performance 2014 (fiscal year) Practical training for Japanese language instructors Shanghai International Studies University Tamkang University Study Tours: Joint study tour in Okinawa with partner students from East Asian universities, Research tour at the border of China&Russia - Joint Seminars with Moscow State Institute of International Relations, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg Study Abroad 200 Study Abroad twice per one student TUFS has enhanced our study abroad program. We aim at having one student study abroad twice 200% Study Abroad ex. short-term visits total number of students who studied abroad 92 students total 406 students 2013 fy 328students 200% Study Abroad TUFS students majoring in Turkish, Vietnamese and Burmese (1st year), and Thai (2nd year) were dispatched those countries in summer TUFS students majoring in Lao (1st year) will go to Laos to study in March total 630 students 2014 fy Global Japan Office 38 branches, 10 years later TUFS will establish Global Japan Office at key overseas partner institutions and the office will provide consulting services with a special focus on Japanese-language education and Japanese Studies area. Global Japan Office will have the following functions: 1. Run Japanese-language and Japanese studies classes and seminars 2. Coordinate the Joint Education Program 3. Arrange internships for TUFS students with a focus on Japanese-language education 4. Arrange volunteering activities for TUFS students 5. This plan is designed so that it supports internationalization of our university and improvement of Japanese students ability to communicate effectively on a global stage. In the academic year 2014, we have established four offices. On January 30th, 2015, the opening ceremony was held for the first Global Japan Office at the University of Yangon. Prof. Aung Thu, Rector of the University of Yangon, Prof. Tateishi, President of TUFS, Dr. Yee Yee Maw, Deputy Director General of the Higher Education Department, Lower Myanmar, Mr. Maruyama, Japanese Minister-Counselor in Myanmar, and representatives from the educational institutions and Japanese companies attended the ceremony. 7 Newsletter No.18 March / 2015 開所式の立石学長 Prof. Tateishi, President of TUFS at the opening ceremony アウントゥーヤンゴン大学長 Prof. Aung Thu, Rector of the University of Yangon specialized educators. They support exchange students from Japan studying in Myanmar, provide information to local students interested in studying in Japan, offer Japanese language classes and introduce Japanese culture to local students. The office is also expected to be a key institute helping to establish an educational network in Myanmar. The new government of Myanmar has embarked on reforms and policies that lead to democracy and this move has started when the President Thein Sein was inaugurated in Myanmar is a favored destination for investments from all over the world such as the West, Japan, China, and Korea. Universities in Myanmar have also started to experience a dramatic change. For example, the University of Yangon did not offer any undergraduate programs for a number of years due to a concern for student movements, however, it then began offering undergraduate degree programs two years ago and it also reorganized its undergraduate studies. With these changes being implemented, we believe that there is a growing need for establishing a key institute for Japanese studies in this new-born university. The Global Japan Office in the University of Yangon is set to contribute to more robust academic exchanges between Japan and Myanmar. The second Global Japan Office has been established at Tamkang University, Taiwan. The opening ceremony was held on March 6, The office is expected to be a key institute offering joint educational programs to students interested in learning Japanese. Events that talk about Japan to the local audience as well as extracurricular lessons in Japanese have been scheduled and will run in future. 日本語教育の実施拠点として 現地ネットワーク拠点の役割も担っていく予定です ミャンマーは 2011 年に就任したテインセイン大統領のもとで民主化が進み 欧米や日本 中国 韓国などからの積極的な経済投資が続いています 大学もまた大きく変わろうとしています 学生運動への警戒から長らく学部課程が閉鎖されていたヤンゴン大学でも 一昨年から学部教育が再開 現在 2 年生を最上級生に学部教育の再編成がすすめられています こうした中 新生ヤンゴン大学に日本研究の拠点を という声があがりました 多くの学部 学科をもつ総合大学に変容しようとしているヤンゴン大学に 日本研究 の拠点が生まれることは 別の意味をもちます さまざまな分野で日本研究が行われること あるいは 多くの分野で日本に留学しようとする学生に日本語への 最初の一歩 を提供することになるからです 本学による Global Japan Office の設置は 日本とミャンマーの大学の交流を活発化させるうえで 大きな貢献となることでしょう 2つめの Global Japan Office は 台湾の淡江大学内のオフィスです 2015 年 3 月 6 日に開所式が行われました 同オフィスは 本学で日本語教育を学ぶ学生と 淡江大学で日本語を学ぶ学生の間の ジョイントエデュケーションプログラムの実施拠点として設置されました 今後は 日本紹介イベントや日本語補習の課外活動の提供なども計画されています SOAS( ロンドン大学東洋 アフリカ研究学院 ) は OFIAS Newsletter No.18 7

8 Tokyo University of Foreign Studies The third office is located at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, known as SOAS. TUFS London Office was established in SOAS in April 2007, and has since been promoting academic exchanges between SOAS and TUFS, supporting the Consortium for Asian and African Studies (CAAS) and also the Global Administrative Exchange Program. SOAS Global Japan Office has been incorporated into our London Office with a specific function to support the Japanese language education, to promote academic exchanges, to study in Japan, and to run activities that introduce Japan to an overseas audience. The fourth office is located in Cairo University, however it has been named slightly differently as a Global Japan Desk. For several years now, the Japanese Department of Cairo University has been hiring the Japanese language teachers who studied in the Japanese language education program here at TUFS and this has strengthened their capabilities. On the other hand, we at TUFS, have been inviting professors from Cairo University to help us out with our Arabic language education. From now on, the Global Japan Desk will hold events for introducing Japan to the students at Cairo University and we will do so with a help from the Japanese language teachers and exchange students from TUFS. In the academic year 2015, we have plans to establish four more overseas offices. Global Japan Office の3つめとなるオフィスですが 2007 年 4 月以来 本学はすでにこの場所にオフィスを構えて 東京外国語大学と SOAS 間における学術交流活動の促進 アジア アフリカ研究 教育コンソーシアム (CAAS) に関する活動 事務職員国際化研修プログラムの実施などの活動を続けてきました ここに SOAS Global Japan Office を併設し 日本語教育のサポート 学生交流 日本留学案内や日本紹介などの活動をさらに活発化させることを予定しています 4つめとしてカイロ大学に設置されたのは Office ではなく Global Japan Desk です カイロ大学の日本語学科は 数年来 本学で日本語教育を学んだ人材を日本語教師として採用し 日本語教育を強化してきました 一方 本学は カイロ大学から客員教員を招へいし 本学におけるアラビア語教育を続けています 今後 本学が送り出す日本語教員や本学からの留学生の貢献により カイロ大学のなかで日本紹介の催し物などを実施することを予定しています 2015 年度には さらに 4つの拠点の設立が予定されています Consortium for Asian and African Studies (CAAS) The 5th International Conference at Columbia University アジア アフリカ研究 教育コンソーシアム (CAAS) 第 5 回国際シンポジウムを開催 ( 於 : コロンビア大学 ) From October 3 to 4, 2014, Columbia University hosted the 5th international symposium organized by The 2014 年 10 月 3 日から 4 日の 2 日間 本学をはじめアジア アフリカ研究で世界のトップレベルにある 7 機関が構成する国際的コンソーシアム アジア アフリカ研究 教育コンソーシアム (CAAS) 主催による第 5 回国際シンポジウムが コロンビア大学を会場にして開催されました 本シンポジウムは 第 1 回ライデン大学 ( オランダ ) 第 2 回フランス国立東洋言語文化学院 (INALCO) 第 3 回ロンドン大学東洋 アフリカ研究学院 (SOAS) ( 英国 ) 第 4 回シンガポール国立大学 (NUS) に引き続いて行われたもので 毎年 CAAS の各加盟機関が持ち回りで担当し 開催することになっています 8 OFIAS Newsletter No.18

9 Newsletter No.18 March / 2015 Consortium for Asian and African Studies (CAAS). CAAS is comprised of seven institutions including TUFS, which are world-leading institutions for research and education of Asian and African studies. The symposium was held following the 1st symposium hosted by Leiden University of the Netherlands, the 2nd hosted by INALCO of France, the 3rd hosted by SOAS of UK, and the 4th hosted by National University of Singapore (NUS). Each institution of CAAS is obliged to host an annual symposium in turn. During the symposium, 24 researchers from CAAS institutions (INALCO, SOAS, Columbia University, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and TUFS) made presentations on their research, based on the theme of Asia and Africa Across Disciplinary and National Lines. 10 Tokyo University of Foreign Studies delivered a welcome speech. Reporting items 1. New coordinators after the 5th meeting (INALCO, Leiden, HUFS, NUS and SOAS) New coordinators at the institutions above were informed. 2. Reconfirmation of the minutes of the previous CAAS Coordinator Meeting The minutes of the 5th CAAS Coordinator Meeting were reconfirmed among the attendants. Agenda 1. Provisional schedule of CAAS Symposium and Workshop after 2014 HUFS s plan for the 6th CAAS Symposium, which will be held on October 30 and 31, 2015, was explained. After some discussions, the theme of the symposium was decided to be Global and Local: New Concepts and Approaches. HUFS will call for papers by the end of April, Also, the meeting confirmed further schedule of the symposium. TUFS will host the 7 th symposium. 2. Publishing the proceedings of the 4th CAAS Symposium (FASS-NUSS) TUFS will manage to publish the proceedings. Each paper will be five-six pages. 3. Potential new CAAS member institutions American University in Cairo and Australian National University were mentioned as potential new CAAS members. The meeting confirmed the procedure of recommending a new institution through the ing list. 4. CAAS funding situation Prof. Miyazaki reported that TUFS applied to Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) for a fund, but it was not accepted. 11 Newsletter No.18 March / Cooperative research projects among CAAS member institutions Prof. Miyazaki proposed a cooperative research project among CAAS member institutions. TUFS will open International Japan Studies Program in 2016 and he proposed to form the TUFS-CAAS Unit for International Japan Studies, a team of researchers of Japan studies from CAAS member institutions. The plan was welcomed by the CAAS member institutions and recruiting researchers for the Unit was also informed. This was the first time we held this lecture overseas. We wanted to support TUFS students in their studies abroad and in building their career paths as well as to utilize our human network on a global scale. 12 Tokyo University of Foreign Studies This lecture was co-hosted by the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, and TUFS. Three lecturers, who are established executives based in the UK and are TUFS alumni, were invited to join us. As many as 21 participants, including TUFS students studying in the UK and TUFS alumni who are now living in the UK, came to the lectures. After the lectures, we had discussions and networking among the participants was encouraged. In Japan, the Global Business Lectures have been delivered as one of the general subjects in the undergraduate curriculum exclusive to the TUFS Fuchu Campus. We have had prominent entrepreneurs and executives from leading companies in Japan give lecturers. This time in London, we held lectures on a trial basis and we have used our expertise from Japan when organizing these. This programme is divided into two parts. The first part is a three-week Summer Course at International Foundation Courses and English Language Studies (IFCELS) in SOAS, and the latter part is a one-week Work Shadowing Programme at the SOAS Administrative Bureau. At IFCELS, I chose the International Relations elective from the theme-based courses. 13 Newsletter No.18 March / 2015 consisted of lectures, seminars and debates and sometimes included study tours to places such as the National Maritime Museum and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In addition, my classmates and I worked together to give a group presentation at the end of the course. I struggled to keep up with the course content for two reasons: first, I had never studied international relations prior to this course, second, the English language competency of my classmates was quite advanced and they were also quite knowledgeable about international relations. Therefore, I achieved a sense of accomplishment when I received a certificate upon completing this course. During the Work Shadowing Programme from July 28th to August 1st, I visited seven different SOAS divisions. I found it helpful to listen to my counterparts from other countries universities speak about how they perform their jobs. I exchanged ideas with them about the financial system and procurement procedures we use at TUFS and they use at SOAS. I was able to get some useful advice which I could potentially use in my job in the future. I saw a number of advantages to this programme. The purpose of this programme was to improve my English ability and to cultivate a more international mindset through practical training. However, in terms of English training, it is different from other overseas study programmes because I was exposed to the language specific to the university administration area. Moreover, I also learned the importance of viewing my own job and even our university from a third-person perspective. Through studying in this programme I have formed a few concrete goals which I would like to achieve in my job. Lastly, I am grateful that OFIAS gave me this precious opportunity to participate in this long-term programme and I am thankful to the SOAS staff for their time and energy and Ms. Kameda, the programme coordinator in the TUFS London office, who looked after me during my stay in London. I will apply what I have learned in my work and bring in all of the positive experiences I gained from this programme to TUFS. This is my token of my appreciation to all of you who have supported me throughout the 授業は 基本的に講義 演習 ディベートの組み合わせで成り立っていましたが 海事博物館や外務省を訪問するようなスタディツアーの日もありました また 授業の最終目標が グループプレゼンテーションだったため コースの後半は グループでの作業も多くありました 国際関係論が学んだことのない分野であったこと かつクラスメイトの英語力が高く 国際関係論に対する興味や知識も豊富であったため 授業についていくのは大変苦労しましたが 修了証を頂いた時は 大きな達成感を味わうことができました グループプレゼンテーションの様子 Group presentations 最終週 7 月 28 日 8 月に1 日に参加した Work Shadowing Programme では 7つの部署を訪問しましたが その中でも 現在の所属部署と同じである経理と調達の担当者からの話を 最も興味深く聞かせて頂きました 自分の経験に基づいて受入れ担当者と意見交換をすることができ 利用しているシステム 物品調達の仕組みについての話からは 実際の業務でも導入していきたいと思えるようなヒントを得ることができ 今後の業務の参考となりました このロンドン大学 SOAS 研修は 実践的な研修を通じて さらなる英語力の向上と国際性の涵養が目的となっていますが 英語力の向上に関して特筆すべきことは これまで経験してきた留学や研修とは異なり ビジネス英語 特に大学事務で使用する英語に触れることができたということです また Work Shadowing Programme に参加して改めて強く認識したのは 自分の業務や外大という職場を客観的に捉 OFIAS Newsletter No.18 13
