However, this decrease is causing damage such as discoloration of the cultured seaweed nori. In addition, fish catches in the Seto Inland Sea continue to decline in amount, suggesting that fishery productivity there is deteriorating. To examine this issue, the Ministry of the Environment of Japan gathered public comments on the role of future environmental conservation in the Seto Inland Sea. To apply these public comments, a committee of directors of the local fisheries experimental stations in the Seto Inland Sea analyzed fisheries monitoring data and oceanographic observations and summarized its opinions. The committees findings revealed that DIN concentrations have declined in all waters of the Seto Inland Sea, and that both fish catches and nori production have declined Fisheries Technology Institute, Hyogo Prefectural Technology Center for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, - Minami-Futami, Akashi, Hyogo 7-9, Japan.
