Distribution of Christianity and the Division of the Region in Prewar Japan ODA Masayasu Following the author s previous study (Oda 1999) which analyzed the distribution of Christianity in current Japan, this paper looks into its spread and the division of the region between 1899 and 1939. The materials are the number of religious buildings published in Statistical Report of the Home Ministry, Annual Report of the Education Ministry and Japanese Empire Statistical Yearbook. Main findings are as follows: 1. There is no outstanding denomination in terms of the number of buildings in both 1899 and 1939. Even the Catholic Church had as much share as one Protestant denomination, whereas its scale is currently close to that of the whole Protestants. 2. While most of the main denominations increased from 1899 to 1939, the Orthodox Church in Japan decreased after 1918. 3. Christian buildings were much more located in Tokyo than any other prefecture in both 1900 and 1939, but a concentration in 1939 can be found in Osaka, Hyogo and Kyoto in Kinki region, too. 4. The distribution patterns are different by denomination. 5. The map of the division of the region based on the prefectural unit is complicated and unclear. 6. The map based on the regional unit is a little too simplified, but able to be close to the reality by some subdivision and arrangement. Professor in the Department of Geography, Komazawa University 34
