日本版 General Social Surveys 研究論文集 [5] JGSS で見た日本人の意識と行動 JGSS Research Series No.2 "Diversity" of Senior Citizen's Social Networks: An Analysis of Discussion Network Based on JGSS-2003 Kuniaki SHISHIDO The purpose of this paper is to clarify some factors that define the "diversity" on senior citizen's social networks, based on discussion network items of JGSS-2003 (questionnaire B).The following eight points are clarified by my analysis, in which I examined three network's dimensions about composition of senior citizen's social networks: network-size, multiplicity of social relationship and network-type. (1) It is large portion of Japanese senior's network-type which is only composed by close relatives (spouse and children), compared with that of American elderly. (2) Social networks of elderly men are smaller and narrower than those of elderly women. Elderly men tend to be isolated. (3) Elderly people who are categorized to high social stratum have large and wide networks. (4) The population size of domicile correlates weakly with the network structure. (5) There is few pure effect of aging that influences the network-structure. (6) The primary factor is elderly marital status(existence of spouse) that defines network-type. The relevance between children's state and network-type is very poor. (7) Network-size of non- relatives in their later lives is influenced by their educational backgrounds and group participations. (8) In order to keep personal networks at their later lives, it is essential that they belong to larger and more organized network. Key Words: JGSS, social networks, elderly (senior citizen) 117
