Summary New Labour s Education Policy in England Toru Okamoto This paper attempts to bring out the primitive characteristics of New Labour s education policy through an overview the development of its educational policies from 1997 to 2001. It is said that the dominant academic conclusion about New Labour s education policy since 1997 has been that it is mainly a continuation of Thatcherism. But the author concludes its education policy deserves more positive evaluation.it s because New Labour seems to have genuinely different approaches to education from Conservative s.those approaches are based on the third way that was propounded by Anthony Giddens.Firstly, New Labour aims to create a meritocratic Britain where all people can get to the highest level their talents take them.secondly, it seeks to include people who are excluded socially.so it puts more emphasis on raising standards of public education especially in deprived areas.
