PROJECT DIGEST 1. PROJECT TITLE : Mahaica-Mahaicony-Abary Lower River Basin Rural Development Plan Study in the Co-operative Republic of Guyana 2. LOCATION : Mahaica-Mahaicony-Abary region, surrounded by the Demerara river in the west, the Berbice river in the east, and the ridges of the drainage basins for the Mahaica, Mahaicony, and Abary rivers, and the Atlantic Ocean 3. EXECUTINGAGENCY : National Drainage and Irrigation Board (NDIB), Ministry of Agriculture. Related Agency for Photogrammetric Mapping : Land and Survey Department, Ministry of Agriculture. 4. OBJECTIVES : The Government of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana has already given the first priority over the Mahaica-Mahaicony-Abary Rural Development Project among other projects after due consideration of the Government's "National Development Strategies". Flood control and drainage and irrigation became twin facets of the main strategy for Guyana's development - AGRICULTURE. From the very inception the leadership of the Government had identified AGRICULTURE as our main thrust for economic independence and self-sufficiency. The Project Area is below sea level and the only natural disaster to be feared is a flood. Flood waters so high and so persistent that they exceed anything in living memory.the Project Area has several serious floods a year. Flood is chronic disaster in the Project Area. The objectives of the Project execution are set up as follows : a) Stabilization of farming by alleviation of flood b) Improvement of livelihood of people, and c) Positive impact on the region in and around the Project 35
The Project Area should aim to maximize the potential agricultural benefits through efficient use of the available land, and flood control and to establish the agricultural production base. 5. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The center of the Project Area is located in about 50 km east from Georgetown, the capital of the country, which will become a key area for the marketing of agricultural products. Access to the Area is from the main national road, which runs west to east, passing the Objective Area along the sea. The Project Area has high agricultural development potential from the viewpoints of water resources, land resources, agro-climatic conditions, and marketability. 6. SCOPE OF ASSISTANCE : REQUIRED a.
