Sch. of Med Kyushu Univ., 2007, vol.8, 59 68 59 Chika Iwashita The purpose of this study was to investigate the shift working and the sleep actual situations in order to clarify how the nurses are dealing with the sleep situation feeling. I investigated 714 nurses who worked at K university hospital, by a questionnaire. The questionnaire survey included such items as, attribution, sleep state, and betterment of sleep state. At first, I classified the shift work into 9 patterns, and them examined the relation between each shift work and sleep state. The average sleeping time was about six hours in the case of a series of day workings, and it was shorter than the night shift working. There were 50% or more people who answered that there was no sleeping time in the day and the evening shift working and before and after the night shift working. However, there were some nurses who answered that they had more sleeping time than in the day working. In every shift work, there were 50% and more nurses who could sleep well, while there were 50% and more nurses as well who awoke halfway in sleep and felt a little bad at awaking. As for how to awake, many nurses awoke for themselves without any support when they went to work after midnight. In order to sleep better, 80% and more nurses made various efforts such as controlling the temperature, humidity, and illumination of the room, as well as using better bedclothes. The situation of sleep changed, especially when the following work was done against the day rhythm. However, there may be sleeping troubles in the nurses who work on in the day shift. Therefore, it is necessary to search the nurses' best way to sleep efficiently, by comparing three factors such as attribution, sleeping time, and sleeping degree with each other, and at the same time by investigation statistically the relationships of these three factors.
