Possibility of Literary Criticism as Practical Science Kenji Hashimoto At the end of the 20th century, the Japanese social system underwent a period of great change. At this time, the Japanese people were forced to live up to higher standards of efficiency in almost every area of their lives. Still today in the field of education, as well as in existing industries, the quality of products is expected to be secured at a high level. As new government policy gradually put the economy ahead of all else, all of the workers here in Japan began to lose their free time. In addition, in recent years, the number of people who read books has decreased as the internet has come into wide use. Accordingly, literary criticism has begun to be seen as a useless study. It is difficult to utilize literary studies for a practical use, but there is a way, and students should have a chance to learn how. Previously, students were asked to consider given issues about a novel or characters under the direction of professors without knowing how to utilize the knowledge in their real lives. However, in this book, all of the students find their own themes for self-fulfillment, and try to write what they really feel they have learned, reading and studying about different areas of the American literary world. At the end of their papers, students write the lessons which they think they learned from the books. The aim of this project is to encourage the students to relate what they learn in their literary studies to their everyday lives, and also to apply it to the future. - 12-
