47 To clarify the current dietary life and use of dietary supplements containing non-vitamin, nonmineral supplements by the university students, a questionnaire survey was conducted between January and April 2004 on 204 male students and 203 female students. The survey consisted of self reported questions pertaining to body physique, health status, eating habits, supplement use and type, source of information, and reasons for use. Most students were of normal weight judged by body mass index (80% for males and 77% for females). Most male students made correct assessment of their body weight, but 70% of the female students evaluated their weight as overweight. The percentages of intake of eggs and vegetables and breakfast every day for the male students were significantly lower than those for female students, and the percentages of both groups were also low in comparison with the general population. The experience of using dietary supplements was widespread in 61% of the males (now 25%, past 36%), and 79% of the females (now 33%, past 46%). The prevalence and the cost of dietary supplements were significantly difference between the sexes, but there were no differences in the current use of dietary supplements. These results suggest that there is a need for appropriate dietary education to the university students. dietary life, dietary supplements, university students
