- March Baan and Family Seeking the Base of Thai Family Thailand has long been developing industrialization more than a quarter century. Industrialization is the major factor in social change and family structures are thus affected by industrialization. A course of family change in developed countries is that nuclear family increases and extended family decreases, which is not the case in Thailand. Thailand has conducted the Population & Housing Census once in every decade. The census results since 1980 shows a quite different course of family change in Thailand: the ratio of nuclear family has been decreasing and that of extended family has been increasing. This family change is accounted for the basis of household change. However, the analysis of household does not explain the family change thoroughly. How can we get another view from which we analyze Thai families more precisely? The author finds three factors that embrace wider range of family concepts than household and that help analyze Thai families. They are: Family Circle, Multihousehold Compound and Descent Group. The author also points out that there is a common field where Thai families exist, which is called Baan in Thai. Baan could be a house, village or even the state. In this paper, the author sees Baan as a compound, which is clearly divided by wooden fence, trees or hedge inside a village. One or a few houses are also found within this Baan. Every house is closely related with matrilateral or matrilineal kinship, agricultural production and consumption of livelihood. The author tries to examine family forms inside the Baan, from nuclear family, the smallest, to joint family, the largest. The author then proposes the latter family form as a new paradigm for analyzing Thai family and believes that many life styles seen amongst Thai people have been shaped through such family forms in rural area as well as in urban area.
