Research on Academic Degrees and University Evaluation, No. 172016 49 ABSTRACT Does a Law School Education Increase Lawyers Income and Job Satisfaction?: A Questionnaire Survey of Lawyers who Passed the New Bar Examination and Those who Passed the Old Bar Examination KOYAMA Osamu The purpose of this paper is to examine whether a law school education increases a lawyers income and job satisfaction by conducting a questionnaire survey targeting two lawyer categories: lawyers who passed the new bar examination and lawyers who passed the old bar examination. The main findings were twofold. First, there was no significant difference in either income or job satisfaction between lawyers who passed the new bar examination and those who passed the old one. In other words, a law school education had no effects in terms of increasing a lawyers income and job satisfaction. Second, the results of law school examinations had no effects in terms of increasing a lawyers income and job satisfaction. In other words, the learning outcomes of a law school education had no effects when viewed with respect to increasing a lawyers income and job satisfaction. These findings suggest that it is necessary to reconsider the relevance of the law school system, especially with regard to educational content, methods and evaluation.
