GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Subject and Verb Agreement Rules Part 2 (5-6 minutes) ( 主語と動詞のルール 2) Subjects and Verbs must always agree. In asking questions, it is very important to identify the subject to avoid confusion on which verb to use. There is a special rule for singular and plural subjects that are connected by and. There is also another rule if you use determiners (each, every, and no). For instance: ( 主語と動詞は 常に呼応しています 質問文では どの動詞を使用するのか判断するために 主語を特定することが非常に重要です ここでは 単数 複数の主語で and によってつながれた主語のルールと each, every, no などの 限定詞 を使うときのルールを勉強しましょう ) 1. In questions, the subject does not always come before the action. Identify what or who the subject is to know which verb to use. ( 質問文では 主語がいつも行動の前にくるわけではありません 正しい動詞を使うために 主語が何か 誰かを特定しましょう ) What are the requirements that the applicants should submit? ( 応募者が提出する必要があるものは何ですか?) 2. Plural verbs are used when two subjects are connected by the conjunction and. (2 つの主語が接続詞 and でつながっている場合 動詞は複数形で受けます ) Their application form and resume are essential if they will go to the job fair. ( もし就職フェアに行くなら 応募書類と履歴書を持っていく必要があります ) Page 3

(2 つの主語が接続詞 and でつながっていても 同じ対象を指している場合は動詞は単数形で受けます ) Coat and tie is the attire required for men who are getting the interview. ( 男性が面接を受ける際には 上着とネクタイを着用する必要があります ) 4. Singular verbs are also used when the words each, every, or no come before the subject. ( each every no が主語の前にくるときには 動詞は単数形で受けます ) Every man and woman is welcome to join the company s campaign program. ( 全ての男女の方は 企業のキャンペーン プログラムにぜひ参加してください ) Remember: When two subjects are joined together by the conjunction and, they should take the plural form of the verb as a general rule. The singular verb should apply to two subjects connected by and only when they are considered as one unit. ( ポイント :2 つの主語が 接続詞 and でつながれているときは 動詞は原則として 複数形で受けるが つながれた 2 つの主語が一式とみなされる場合は 動詞は単数形で 受けます ) Comprehension Check: Create a sentence with two subjects connected by and that act as one. Page 4
