My experience of two-month stay at the University of Hawaii ZOU Rong I am in the second year of the Functional Mathematics Course of the Doctoral Course, Graduate School of Mathematics, Kyushu

I enjoyed the study, the research, the laboratory life, and made a lot of friends there.

We shared the same bathroom and kitchen.

As a bonus, I exercised my English much with them. A trip to Maui Island to attend a conference is an unforgettable experience. Also, I enjoyed the math event for primary school students.

4 My experience of two-month stay at the University of Hawaii ZOU Rong I am in the second year of the Functional Mathematics Course of the Doctoral Course, Graduate School of Mathematics, Kyushu University. Last year, by the invitation from Prof. Monique Chyba, I had an opportunity to experience the study and research at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, from Oct.17 to Dec.22. I enjoyed the study, the research, the laboratory life, and made a lot of friends there. It was the time when Japan entered autumn and was getting cold, but oppositely Hawaii was very warm all the time. I was living there in a dormitory where students from different countries gathered. We shared the same bathroom and kitchen. We sometimes had parties and went to the beach, so we were able to have a good communication, which enriched my life and refreshed me a lot after the work and study at the University. As a bonus, I exercised my English much with them. A trip to Maui Island to attend a conference is an unforgettable experience. Also, I enjoyed the math event for primary school students. I was impressed by the enthusiasm of Prof. Chyba to try to encourage young children. I was supervised by Prof. Chyba. She is very kind and planned for me to study and do some research on modeling fractone-controlled cell-mitosis process that is one of her research interests. There are two main works I did, the mathematical and the biological side. On the mathematical side, I discussed the model with Prof. Chyba and Aaron Tamura-Sato, a student of Prof. Chyba (see the photo). It is a disturbed diffusion model influenced by the fractone, a kind of membrane in the brain supposed to transfer the growth factor to the cell to stimulate it to undergo mitosis. This is the doctoral research for Aaron, and he constructed the main model already. What we did new is to add meninges, an important membrane around the brain which is supposed to be a rich source of the growth factor, and to add another negative growth factor which prevents the cell from undergoing mitosis, into the code. Laboratory working was very interesting. I worked with Aaron and Doc. Mercier, who is a professor in the Biology and taught me a lot about the brain biology and the experiment. We dyed the cut mouse brain, and counted the number of fractones and compared it between normal mouse and autistic mouse. On Dec.23, it was sunny in Honolulu, but was snowing in Fukuoka. I finished a fruitful trip and could continue my study at Kyushu University.
