One of the biggest changes will be the introduction of English as an official school subject for 5 th and 6 th graders in public elementary schools from English language education at universities is not an exception to significant changes. In fact, many universities have made substantial modifications to their language education curricula in recent times. However, curriculum amendment cannot be made without careful considerations, and the language teachers, as well as school administrators, encounter a number of issues at the designing, piloting, and implementing phases of curriculum amendment. Expecting possible issues at various phases of curriculum change facilitates the transformation of the curriculum. For this purpose, the theoretical and practical issues in relation to curriculum development and implementation will be explored using the case of a university that underwent major curriculum amendment in Preliminary assessments and piloting for curriculum development Yukie Saito Curriculum design involves several different preliminary assessments. First, needs assessment including learners levels and demands in the society and the school must be taken into consideration. Then, the evaluation of existing curriculum is crucial when determining what should be revised to improve the quality of education. In addition, assessment of newly developed or amended curriculum through piloting is an important part of curriculum development as issues always arise at the practical level even after thorough designing. Small-scale piloting can offer several practical suggestions which should be considered before the actual implementation of the new program. In this talk, the process of preliminary assessments will be discussed. An additional component to existing curriculum Corazon Talam Kato Curriculum development usually involves revising the existing curriculum by replacing a course with a new course, adding a new course, and eliminating an existing course in the curriculum. Adding a new component to the existing curriculum requires careful considerations theoretically and practically. The theoretical background, as well as practical issues related to adding a new component to the existing curriculum, including assessing learners needs, arranging time allocations, ensuring teacher availability,

10 8 (42) and conducting faculty development, will be discussed using a case of mandatory English education curriculum that recently added a reading component. Practical considerations will be given to facilitate the future curriculum amendment of similar language education programs. Material selection and development for revised curriculum Katsuya Yokomoto As curriculum is amended, teaching materials must be developed or at least selected from published textbooks. Thorough analyses of the curriculum goals and objectives, as well as the textbooks themselves, are needed for this process. Among several means of choosing the materials, textbooks must be reviewed from several different perspectives depending on the curriculum needs. Also, development of inhouse materials will be discussed, as none of the published materials available in the market meet all the pedagogical goals of any one curriculum without in-house supplementation. A case of material development at a university will be introduced, and several practical suggestions will be given to tailoring the materials to meet the needs of the students and the curriculum. 16:20 17: Lost in the Detail: Edgar Allen Poe s Murders in the Rue Morgue D. And yet every one who acknowledges this truth will be drawn to a further observation: that though we all do get lost in the detail and get lost all the time you d never know it from our reading practices. In these, at least by the time they appear in print, the alleged danger of absorption in the detail has always been successfully overcome in the name of Meaning, History, the Real. In my surrender to a single, but insistent detail in Poe s Murders in the Rue Morgue, a detail I can neither ignore nor render into a serviceable interpretative takeaway, I try to convey an experience of what getting seriously lost in the detail might involve.
