3 The Founding Spirit of Asahi University 建学的精神 建学の精神 Asahi University's Mission and Goal Chairman of the Board of Directors Jun Miyata 理事長 The founding spirit of Asahi University is to foster individuals who are rich in sociality and creativity, which are two important elements to open up the international society in the future, and rich in universal human intelligence common to all people. About Sociality The idea of co-existence of human being faces many problems to be solved, such as problem of global resource and environment, labor problem in the aging society, problem of international economy in advanced countries, and problem of social economy in developing countries. To deal with such problems and to promote prosperity and happiness of human being, Asahi University aims to foster such individuals who have international sense and sociality, and respects harmony. About Creativity Thanks to the dramatic development of science and technology, the human being has obtained materid wealth, but this development of science and technology must contribute to the formation of well-round character as well. To harmonize the progress of advanced science and the formation of well-round character, human being needs to use the creative wisdom. To attain this goal, Asahi University promotes specialized and comprehensive education and researches with the interdisciplinary cooperation of natural science, human and social science, and other arts. About Human Intelligence As we face the age of highly advanced industrial and information society, our style of living and values has been drastically changed. While we enjoy the sound development of science and technology, we must also control the runaway of such development. 4 Education Philosophy 教育理念 教育理念 President Katsuyuki Ohtomo 学長 The educational philosophy of Asahi University is to foster individuals who are rich in social awareness, creativity and knowledge, which is the core of the university s foundation. Asahi University consists of 4 schools; The School of Law, The School of Business Administration, The School of Health Sciences, and The School of Dentistry. We also offer graduate education programs in Law, Business Administration, Dentistry, as well as a special Japanese Language and Culture Course for international students. Each school provides specialized and effective education that responds to the needs of the diverse and challenging global environment. Th rough continuous education reform, Asahi University strives to establish an education system that functions well in the international information society, and provides a system that develops individual potential and fosters individuals who have extensive knowledge in their field and can take action and contribute to a better future for all. Since 97, Asahi University has been actively involved in promoting internationalization. To this end, we continue to strengthen exchange and cooperation with foreign embassies in Japan, and have recently received visits from the Chinese Consul General in Nagoya and the Ambassador to Japan of the Republic of South Africa. We also have active partnerships with 9 prestigious universities around the world, including UCLA and Peking University, where we have established cooperation in research, education, student exchange programs, faculty staff training and outsourcing. In the past ten years, the Department of Dentistry has offered a structured curriculum that fosters expert professionals in the field of dentistry and we are committed to producing highly skilled clinical dentists by providing quality education that culminates with effective postgraduate clinical training and the desire for ongoing self-improvement. The Department of Law and the Department of Business Administration have enhanced the quality of education by offering curricula that fulfi ll the students future goals and needs. Consequently, we have achieved a high graduate employment rate and a high number of successful students taking the new bar examination. In the field of accounting, a close partnership with local high schools has resulted in the development of a comprehensive and well-structured educational environment that provides students with 3 years of preparatory study at high school and 4 years of specialized learning at university. As a result, we have succeeded in cultivating students with the right attitude and skill needed to pass the certified public accountant examination before graduation. Since the founding of this program 6 years ago, 2 students in total have passed the extremely demanding certified public accountant 5 examination before graduation. The Department of Nursing, School of Health Sciences, takes excellent advantage of the university s affi liated hospital, Asahi University Hospital, a 38-bed hospital located in front of JR Gifu Station. Th is facility provides the students with an outlet for practical education that will enable students to acquire the real-world knowledge and skills that will be needed in the actual clinical practice of medical care for patients who experience sudden and life-threatening illnesses and conditions. The growth of the university has continued with the establishment of a new department, the Department of Health and Sport Sciences in the School of Health Sciences. The new department aims to foster individuals who will be able to work as dedicated and knowledgeable professionals in a future that is becoming more and more competitive and demanding, by committing all of our extensive knowledge and research gained from our medical, dentistry and nursing background to create a truly unique, creative and comprehensive experience for students enrolled in our physical education and sports science course. Along with the Asahi University Athletic Association, we continue to support sports activities. We have had a proud history of students and graduates challenging themselves and making great sporting achievements, including our alumni Ms. Seira Nakayama, who competed in the London Olympics in 202 in the fencing competition. In the same year, the 67th National Sports Festival in Gifu (Gifu Seiryu Kokutai) was held, and many of our students, alumni and faculty members took part as competitors, staff, or volunteers. Their participation became the prime mover for the event. In addition, Ms. Rie Kaneto won a gold medal in the Rio 206 Olympics. Ms. Kaneto is a member of the Gifu Mizuho Sports Garden, which was established on campus to support and contribute to the enhancement of the local sports clubs. As we look ahead, the university is offering a training place for many young and aspiring athletes to prepare for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Also, we continue to maintain our open space facility to promote life-long sport and fitness. The Gifu College of Dentistry was established. The Gifu College of Dentistry Hospital was established. The Dental Hygienist School attached to the Gifu College of Dentistry was established. The Facilities of Murakami Surgical Hospital in the City of Gifu were donated to the Gifu College of Dentistry, and it became Murakami Memorial Hospital (presently attached to Asahi University). The Dental Hygienist School was approved as a vocational school. The Graduate Course of Dentistry (Doctoral Program in Dentistry) was established. The Dental Hygienist School was renamed to the Attached Dental Hygienist Vocational School. The dental clinic attached to the Post Doctoral Institute of the Gifu College of Dentistry was established. The construction of the 0th Anniversary Memorial Hall was completed. Murakami Memorial Hospital was removed and reconstructed. The Department of Business Administration was established at the School of Business Administration. The name of the educational corporation was changed to Asahi University, and the Attached Dental Hygienist Vocation School was renamed to the Asahi University School for Dental Hygienists. The Department of Law was established at the School of Law. Signed academic agreement with Meikai University, Japan. Teaching profession courses were established for the Department of Business Administration at the School of Business Administration and the Department of Law at the School of Law. The Department of Information Management was established at the School of Business Administration. Teaching profession courses were established as well. The Graduate Course of Law (Master Program in Law) was established at Asahi University's Graduate School. A teaching profession course was established as well. A Doctoral Program was added to the Graduate Course of Law at Asahi University's Graduate School. The Graduate Course of Business Administration (Master Program in Information Management Sciences) was established at Asahi University's Graduate School. A teaching profession course was established as well. A Doctoral Program was added to the Graduate Course of Business Administration at Asahi University's Graduate School. The Department of Nursing at the School of Health Sciences was established. The Department of Management and Information Studies at the School of Business Administration was discontinued. The Doctoral Program (Second Half) at the Graduate School of Law was discontinued and the Doctoral Program (First Half) was renamed as Master Program in Law. The Doctoral Program (Second Half) at the Graduate School of Business Administration was discontinued and the Doctoral Program (First Half) in Information Management Sciences was renamed as Master Program in Business Administration. Asahi University Nagoya Satellite Campus was discontinued. The Department of Health and Sport Sciences at the School of Health Sciences was established. Teaching profession courses were established as well. The Department of Business Planning at the School of Business Administration was discontinued. Asahi Univeristy Hospital was renamed as Asahi University Medical & Dental Center. Asahi University Hospital PDI Dental Clinic at Gifu was renamed as Asahi Universtiy PDI Dental Clinic at Gifu. Within any type of organization, whether it is a family home, a club, a company, or the local community, the same knowledge and methods of management can be used effectively. History and experience has shown time and again that effective management method can effective positive change in people s lives. Many local communities, including Gifu, have proud histories of great business managers contributing significantly to the development of not only their company, but also to the community around them. Such successful and influential individuals have led by example, adapting their management methods for both the needs of the people inside their companies, and also for the needs of the natural environment, the political situation and changes in society. To foster individuals who have an ability to be such effectual and influential managers of a local community, we provide basic courses for students to develop and maintain a big picture view of management, the state of the local and global economy, key economic data, and of course, the relationship with society. Once this foundation outlook and know-how has been developed, our students refi ne and customize their skills by acquiring specialized and enduring knowledge that will enable them to be effective regardless of the challenges of an ever changing, increasingly globalized, and rapidly automated world. Students will choose one course from the following three courses: Marketing Course, Accounting and Finance course, and Global Commerce Course. By engaging in discussions of theory and principle, and learning from a variety of hands-on training, each student will become aware of their specific goals and motivations. In addition, through such dynamic and interactive courses, students will learn and acquire the skill and confidence to act independently and think logically. In School of Business Administration, fi rst year students will acquire a strong foundation of key business economics from logical and wellstructured instruction and coaching. Students will then choose one course from the following three courses and advance their expertise through practical methods. Marketing Course: to understand consumer psychology and area characteristics, and actively learn from real business experience. Arguably, the leading factor in the worldwide economic stagnation of the 2st century is that despite the increase and spread of communication systems, the rapid growth of social and individual diversity has created increasing challenges in understanding people s needs. Likewise, even though technical advancements in the field of automation and robotics continues to cause debate between efficiency and employment of labor, there is no question that there will be a demand for people who can see above and below the surface data to truly understand the consumer. Th is course is designed to foster individuals whose goal is to be a professional who can perceive and recognize underlying trends and attitudes, and use that skill to develop products that reflect specific area characteristics and introduce IT products by using a design-oriented thinking process. Accounting and Finance Course: to gain the knowledge, skill and confidence needed to pass one of the most difficult examinations the examination to become a certified specialist, such as an accounting professional. Despite its pitfalls, having a system of money and currency has been a key motivating and driving factor for the world s growth, and we have challenged ourselves to make our life better and have made great progress. Th is financial drive continues and it is the road towards the future. Th is course is designed to foster individuals whose goal is to be an accounting and financial professional who can accurately comprehend and integrate company information to establish an effective measure of confidence and trust for businesses, and to systematically and effectively manage funds that will allow managers and leaders to have the confidence to invest in the positive growth and development of local and global societies. Global Commerce Course: to acquire the essential skills such as development of language skills that enhances effective communication, or the necessary qualifications such as becoming registered customs specialists in the field of international distribution, and to also learn practical skills and confidence through the hands-on experience in our industry-university collaboration program. Successful individuals not only have knowledge of theory, but also have the confidence to take action and the communicative skills to lead people to overcome such challenges and get the job done. Two of the most important goals expected of students in our four years of study are to develop an ability to adapt to, and moreover, to look beyond the individual to perceive the necessity and value of committing themselves to society as a whole. Th is way we can keep our students on a par with other countries that are already ahead in the race towards achieving successful globalization by confi rming and instilling the belief in their right to choose and receive payment in return for their hard work, while at the same time, guiding their discovery of their own responsibility to contribute to a productive and harmonious society. In Japan where previously theory has been given more priority than experience and practice, and children have had less opportunities to experience responsibility and independence, our course targets this imbalance and helps our students to realize their not just their goals, but also their place in the local and global society. Thus in such a dynamic and social environment, the Department of Business Planning reinforces our traditional philosophy while also balancing proven theory with a management know-how that places high value on practice and experience so that we can achieve our goal to foster highly professional and skilled individuals for the business world of today. The Department of Business Planning has introduced a new style of education, in which experienced instructors teach and guide the students. Students learn the three important skills: communication, reliability as a member of a team, and personal computer skills, all of which are indispensable to playing an important role in any company. Some of our full time instructors have real-life experience in business administration at a top level, performing a multitude of varying roles in industries such as manufacturing, credit institutions, venture companies, consulting fi rms and more. The fi rst year focuses on building up a basic knowledge of business administration through core subjects and examining real-world examples through practical and active learning, with a final outcome of students being able to decide the future direction of their study. By offering a study of theoretical concepts related to the field in which students are interested, we foster individuals who have the ability to analyze and deal effectively with problems they will face in managing a business. Supported by their faculties guidance, the foundation philosophy of Asahi University, students will actively determine their fields of study: sports management, IT utilization in a local area, and product development. The sports management course fosters individuals who can assess a situation proactively with the right know-how and confidence to select the best course of action to deal with the kinds of common and uncommon challenges facing businesses of today. Th is contemporary and progressive course focuses on applying real sport experience, including obstacles to achieving an effective and positive team with a consistent and reliable high performance, and applying it to achieving a unique and effective perspective of business analysis and problem solving. The IT utilization in a local area course is for individuals driven by a desire to better their local community by starting a new business that stimulates and enhances local businesses through the effective application of information technology. In the Department of Nursing, clinical nursing is considered the most important stage of our students training. Furthermore, students will not only gain sports instructional and leadership skills, but will also develop the essential knowledge and skills required to be a member and leader of society and effect positive change. It is our concurrent goal to foster individuals who will contribute to society with a high level and regard of humanity and a high degree of internationality while also maintaining high ethical standards. To fulfi ll these goals, we provide education and training that enables students to develop all-around ability as a sports player, instructional skills to provide training appropriate to life stages, critical thinking to challenge ideas and view health and sports from a scientific perspective and an ability to effectively organize, manage and run sporting events. We have systematically organized courses to provide our students with the best possible progression and advancement of knowledge, skills and techniques related to health and sports. In addition, the fostering of qualities and abilities necessary for a successful health and physical education teacher or sports instructors during our 4 year curriculum is considered to be very important and compulsory for all the students in this department. We concentrate our efforts to develop our students ability to be a qualified health and physical education teacher at a junior or senior high school, sports instructors who can provide training appropriate to all the stages in an individual s life, or professionals who can contribute positively and effectively to local sports activities. We offer two courses, the Health Sciences Course and Sports Sciences Course, and students a free to select the course that can fulfi ll their needs and assist them in pursuing their future career goals. 11 School of Dentistry Dept. of Dentistry 口腔医学院 口腔系 歯学部 歯学科 Departmental Features Our main goal in the Department of Dentistry is to train and educate our students to become highly skilled medical professionals who have a commitment and genuine desire to contribute not only to the local dental community, but also to the wider international field of dentistry. In line with the mission of the university, the department and its curricula instills a high standard of ethics, imparts informative and effective knowledge of all fields of dentistry, and utilizes instruction and subject matter that encompasses a broad field of know-how and effective dental techniques. To achieve this goal, we have adopted a 6-year integrated education, composed of two levels of education: Liberal Arts Education and Technical Dentistry education. In the clinical dental training stage, students learn the necessary clinical and communication skills to earn the trust of patients by being involved fi rst hand during medical examinations. Students are able to see theoretical procedures put into practice, and thus obtain valuable and practical knowledge, varied interpretations, practical skills, and a professional and empathetic mindset. In addition, students soon come to realize the importance and benefits of teamwork through collaborating with other medical professionals. From the dental training, students develop an awareness of safe control and risk management. Students also learn the steps and practices that are necessary to prevent medical accidents and infection. In their fi rst stages of learning, students are required to build up an extensive knowledge of current domestic and international affairs and practice to obtain a solid foundation and wide perspective in order to cope with an ever expanding and challenging field. Key features of our course include interactive lectures to facilitate confidence and cooperation, as well as hospital visits that provide a more practical based learning program, called early clinical practice. The faculty aims to improve the basic scholastic ability required to master the challenging field of dentistry, and more importantly, help our students to achieve a high level of personal growth and understanding that will provide not only a solid foundation from which to begin their future careers, but also give them the drive for continued improvement and excellence. In the Department of Dentistry we dedicate our efforts to maintaining a balanced education, whereby trusted techniques are taught alongside the most recent developments and research in order to meet the high demands of modern dentistry. In order to build an interactive educational system, in 206 we reached new milestones in our endeavor to promote active learning through such initiatives as introducing student response devices (clickers), a new learning support system and many more. During the Technical Dentistry Education stage, the curriculum is designed to provide a bridge between the basic dentistry subjects and clinical dentistry subjects. The final aim is to provide an education of dentistry that embraces an effective partnership between both clinical dentistry and general medicine. Since 2008 the Graduate School of Dentistry has revitalized and reorganized our curriculum in order to respond to the rapid development of science and technology. We have endeavored to achieve an effective mix of principle and clinical study that is both interactive and cooperative. Students gain a much more profound understanding and learn state-of-theart clinical techniques multilaterally and systematically. We strive to offer comprehensive support and provide effective, up-to-date learning by holding lectures given by prominent instructors invited from all over the world. In addition, we are also actively recruiting graduate students to join our teaching staff so that they may find success as an educator in their futures. In the Graduate School of Dentistry, we provide two basic courses for those wishing to become advanced clinical dentists, researchers and educators. Advanced Oral-Medical Sciences Th is course is designed for students of clinical dentistry who wish to specialize and work primarily in the promising fields of reproduction and reconstruction. To respond to this social task, we have established the Center for Teaching Profession in many of our schools, including the School of Law, School of Business Administration, School of Health Sciences and their respective graduate schools. In keeping with the mission of Asahi University, we strive to inspire individuals to pursue sociality, creativity, human intelligence, and to engage in the education of the 2st century. In the Center for Teaching Profession, we have adopted a great mock classroom education system based on the school curriculum guidelines. Our experienced experts and educators have and continue to conduct meaningful academic research in the educational field. In addition to sharing this research, they provide concrete and practical advice and guidance starting from the fundamental skill of teaching subjects, to the special skills required to be a successful and supportive teacher, such as student guidance, career guidance, and educational counseling. We aim to foster instructors who will be able to provide all-round education and support to their students. To this end, we have established many avenues of support for those who are working hard to acquire a teacher s license. 17 Japanese Language and Culture Course 留学生预科 日语研修课程 留学生別科 日本語研修課程 The Japanese Language and Culture Course strives to achieve three primary goals:. To teach essential Japanese language to international students who wish to proceed to study at universities and/or enter graduate courses. 2. To promote a thoughtful and respectful intercultural understanding and rewarding school life through our studies and activities by exploring Japanese culture and social norms through comparison with the students own countries. 3. To provide students with the knowledge, confidence and skill required to successfully pass entrance examinations at universities and/or graduate schools. Our course is designed and staged to specifically target these goals with a methodical, systemic and supportive approach that motivates and empowers our students. Th rough our three dedicated subjects: Japanese Language, Japanese Society and Culture and Foundation Studies, students will deepen their understanding of Japan, achieve more productive communication, and as a result, have the confidence to take on more active roles while in Japan. 3. Japanese Language Our 6 streamed subjects: Grammar / Structure, Oral Expression, Writing, Reading, Listening, and General Practice, help students gain the necessary Japanese language skills required to study in Japanese universities and graduate schools. We also offer preparation studies for the Japanese University Admission Examination for International Students (EJU) and Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). 2. Japanese Society and Culture Th is course aims to deepen our students understanding of Japanese society and culture by comparing Japan to their own countries culture and lifestyle. In this way, we can set the stage for a mutual understanding and enjoyment of different cultures. The course is comprised of 5 subjects: Cross Culture Understanding, Japanese Law, Japanese Society, Japanese Culture, and Japanese History.
