5 Patient Education Managing Diabetes Frequent visits to your health professional are important for diabetes management. This handout is just an overview to get you started. Your dietitian can help teach you more about carbohydrates, how diet affects diabetes, and create a diet that suits your needs. Diabetes management includes diet, exercise, monitoring of blood sugar levels, and possibly insulin and medications. Diet, exercise, and monitoring are all important for living a healthy life with diabetes. Type 1 vs. Type 2 Insulin is needed to help the body cells absorb glucose from the blood. If insulin is not available (as in Type 1) or is not working at its full capacity (as in Type 2) then blood glucose levels will remain high. Diet The diet will differ for people trying to manage Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes but the main component is awareness of carbohydrates. When carbohydrates are eaten they are absorbed and broken down into glucose. The more carbohydrates eaten, the more the blood glucose levels increase. Your meal plan will be based on your exercise, diet, and personal lifestyle habits. Basics of Counting Carbohydrates One carbohydrate choice is 15 grams of carbohydrate. The main foods that contain carbohydrate are grain products, fruit, dairy, and sweets. If you are unsure of the amount of carbohydrate, you can always read the food label for the Total Carbohydrate. Other factors can affect the rate of absorption of the carbohydrate and will affect blood glucose levels as well. Carbohydrates with different levels of glycemic load (according to the glycemic index) and meals high in fat and protein will affect blood glucose levels. Visit or talk to your dietitian to learn more.
6 Page 2 Managing Diabetes Examples of Carbohydrate Choices 1 cup milk or yogurt ½ cup hot cereal ½ cup ice cream 1 small fruit (4 ounces) ½ cup legumes 3 cups popped popcorn 1 tortilla 1 ounce bread 1 tablespoon jam or syrup ⅓ cup pasta or rice ½ cup fresh fruit or juice Exercise People with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes benefit greatly from exercise. Exercise helps the body use glucose from the blood and keep blood glucose levels from rising without the help of insulin. For people with Type 1 diabetes, this means better control of blood glucose levels and possibly fewer insulin injections. For people with Type 2 diabetes, exercise lowers blood glucose levels, which helps keep them within range. This could mean less use of medications and insulin injections. In both types, exercise helps with weight loss, reducing the symptoms of diabetes. Weight Loss A 5 to 10% reduction in body weight along with 30 minutes of exercise each day can reduce diabetes by 58%. See our handout, Do You Need to Lose Weight? to learn more. Monitoring Blood glucose levels need to be monitored to prevent complications from diabetes. When blood glucose is too low, called hypoglycemia, dizziness, tiredness, confusion, and possibly coma occurs. When blood glucose is too high, called hyperglycemia, complications such as kidney disease, loss of sight, and loss of feeling in the feet and hands can occur. By monitoring blood glucose levels, these complications may be avoided. Monitoring is done using a glucose meter. To test your blood glucose levels, you: Prick your finger. Place a drop of blood on a testing strip. Read the meter that shows your blood glucose levels. It is important to know what your blood glucose levels are so your diet and medications can be adjusted as needed.
7 Managing Diabetes Questions? Call Your questions are important. Call your doctor or health care provider if you have questions or concerns. UWMC clinic staff are also available to help at any time.
