7 tramping in the abel tasman potential verbs Potential verbs let you express the ability or inability to do something. These are the ones you ll learn in Day 1. 話 せる ならえる ねむれる およげる 食 べられる 行 ける to be able to speak, can speak to be able to learn, can learn to be able to sleep, can sleep to be able to swim, can swim to be able to eat, can eat to be able to go, can go Potential verbs are used to say what you can or can t do. In English we add can or able to with a verb to express this. You have probably already learnt a similar way to do this in Japanese: plain verb + ことができる = I can do the action in the verb. It is also possible to say what you can do by changing the verb. This is more common than using plain verb + ことができる. Here are some examples: どんなむずかしい きょくでも ひけます However difficult the composition, I can play it. 大 学 には たぶん 入 れると 思 います I think I probably will be able to enter university. Forming potential verbs is done like this: verbs ending in iru or eru replace the る with られる Example Potential form English 食 べる 食 べられる can eat 上 げる 上 げられる can give 見 る 見 られる can see かんがえる かんがえられる can think about In modern spoken Japanese the られる ending has become shortened to れる. 8 tramping in the abel tasman verbs ending in u replace the final u with eru Example Potential form English 買 う 買 える can buy 聞 く 聞 ける can hear いそぐ いそげる can hurry 話 す 話 せる can talk まつ まてる can wait しぬ しねる can die よぶ よべる can call よむ よめる can read なる なれる can become irregular verbs Example Potential form English する できる to be able to/can do く 来 る こ 来 られる can come く Notice that the potential form of 来 る becomes 来 られる. In modern spoken Japanese, こ こ く こ 来 られる is shortened further to 来 れる. So 来 る (to come) becomes 来 られる or こ 来 れる (can come). which particle to use with a potential verb The を used in a non-potential sentence mostly becomes が when the sentence uses a potential verb. 私 は フランス 語 を 話 します こ I speak French. 私 は フランス 語 が 話 せます I can speak French. できる will also use が but does not always need a particle. 9 tramping in the abel tasman forming negative potential verbs The negative forms of potential verbs are formed by adding ません or ない. For example, やめられません or やめられない. verbs with no potential form These verbs have no potential form: わかる いる ある to understand to need to be/have Track 1. 13 4 日 目 i didn t know whether to play tennis or not this summer learning intentions In this lesson you will learn to: express doubt, possibility, probability or uncertainty using かどうか, か and はずだ read and write 雪 expressing uncertainty plain verb + かどうか Today you ll be looking at how to express uncertainty or probability in three ways. The first way has a similar meaning to whether or not in English. For example やくに 立 つかどうかわからない I don t know whether it will be useful or not. 行 けるかどうかまだわからないんだ I still don t know whether I will be able to go or not. As in these sentences, かどうか is often followed by わからない/わかりません. Another common pattern using かどうか is shown by the following example. なかうえ もと 中 上 さんは たに 本 さんに 青 森 けんに 行 くかどうか 聞 きました Miss Nakaue asked Miss Tanimoto whether she will go to Aomori Prefecture or not. Here かどうか is followed by 聞 く meaning to ask. An answer to questions using かどうか + 聞 く can be either an affirmative or a negative answer. ゆきこは まさおが 東 京 に 行 くかどうか 聞 きました Yukiko asked Masao whether he will go to Tokyo or not. まさおは 行 くと 答 えました Masao replied that he will go. or まさおは 行 かないと 答 えました Masao replied that he won t go. 14 i didn t know whether to play tennis or not this summer expressing possibility and probability using か within a sentence As you already know, か is used at the end of a sentence to make it into a question. You can also use か within a sentence to say such things as: I know or (don t know) where / how / who / what / which... by using the appropriate question word with か within the larger sentence. This is the second way of expressing doubt you re learning today. For example: 山 高 さんがどこにいるのかわかりません I don t know where Miss Yamataka is. だれが 車 をつかったか 知 っていますか Do you know who used the car? かの 先 生 は 私 にしけんがいつあるか 教 えてくださいました Mr Kano told me when the exam will be. You can also use か within a sentence to report questions using 聞 きました (asked). You do this by using か between the question and 聞 きました. For example: ゆきこは まさおがいつ 青 森 に 行 くか 聞 きました Yukiko asked when Masao will go to Aomori. plain verb + はずです The third way to express doubt or probability is by using plain verb + はずです. This is roughly equivalent to I expect or probably in English. When a speaker uses はずで す at the end of his or her sentence, it indicates he or she is making a judgement about the possibility of a particular action or event taking place. It is similar to the pattern, plain verb + で しょう but is a stronger statement of possibility. Plain verb + でしょう is a guess. 寺 田 さんは 来 るはずです Mr Terada will probably come. I expect Mr Terada will come. The speaker may have some prior knowledge; perhaps Mr Terada has already telephoned to say he will come, or in the past Mr Terada has always come. 寺 田 さんは 来 るでしょう Probably Mr Terada will come. I guess Mr Terada will come. Here the speaker is indicating by でしょう that they are not really sure, they are taking a guess that Mr Terada will come. Look at this example. Here Naoko says. うそ 信 じられないわ あなたは 知 っているはずだよ That s a lie. I don t believe you. I expect you do know.
