Abstract. Hepcidin is the principal regulator of iron metabolism and simultaneously acts as the key-regulator of anemia of chronic disease. It is a hormone which is produced by the hepatocytes and its production is triggered mainly by the amount of circulating body iron, inflammation, hypoxia and the erythropoietic activity of the body. In molecular level, hepcidin acts via the binding of ferroportin which is the basic cellular exporter of iron from the intracellular space to the systemic circulation. The exact role of hepcidin is the inhibition of iron cellular efflux. Several laboratory methods for hepcidin ッs quantification have already been proposed but none has been established for clinical use so far. Hepcidin could open new horizons concerning diagnosis and therapy of diseases related to iron metabolism. Key words: hepcidin, iron, ferroportin, anemia of chronic disease.
