1 Summary Baren / Balen there is no distinction between l and r in the Japanese language is a wellknown pressing and rubbing pad used for printing woodblocks in Japan. It had been in widespread use during the Edo period th mid- th century for sophisticated multicolored woodblock prints, including Ukiyo-e. [Plate, ] Most Japanese believe that Baren is a word of Japanese origin, as it denotes a traditional Japanese tool for traditional Japanese art. My conjecture is that this word began to be used in Japan in the late th century and that it derives from the German word Ballen, which was a tool for printing and was brought to Japan in the late th century by Jesuit missionaries together with a printing machine of the type invented by Johannes Gutenberg in Mainz, Germany. After Gutenberg had invented his printing machine, texts were printed by the machine but ornamental illustrations were added to the printed pages afterwards, either by hand painting or by woodblock printing. There were two types of Ballen in use: one type was used for spreading ink over the type-set printing plates, and another type was used for rubbing the backside of the paper spread over the woodblocks. [Plate ] Using the printing machine, Jesuit missionaries printed their books not only in Kyushu but also in Kyoto, which was the center of culture including publication. In those days demands for printed information arose among common citizens, and many woodblock printing houses opened in Kyoto. Manufacturing techniques had rapidly developed in those days in Japan and wood blocks with perfectly flat and smooth surfaces, which were necessary for producing sophisticated woodblock prints, became available, owing to newly invented carpentry tools. Between the late th and mid- th centuries there was a trend among Japanese citizens to adopt the foreign words used by European traders and missionaries, and those words were used in an unrestricted fashion without always being loyal to the original meanings. From this circumstantial evidence I conclude as follows. The new type of rubbing tool that was to be called Baren was invented by some unknown craftsman/craftsmen because of the need to produce sophisticated woodblock prints including Ukiyo-e in the late th early th century. The new rubbing tool was round and wrapped with bamboo slivers, unlike the Chinese and Korean rubbing tools, and people began to call it by the German name of those round ink-spreading or pressing tools that were wrapped with dog leather, the Ballen ( Baren ), which they curiously
