Historical Memories and Tourism in Northeast Asia Activities of the General Kim Jwa-jin Memorial League in China 1920 10 80 2001
2007 2010 60 Korean tourism has boomed in China in recent years. Tours of the northeastern area of China around the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in Jilin Province have become increasingly popular. In addition to climbing the summit of Paektu-san Chinese name: Changbaishan, regarded by the Korean people as a holy mountain, visiting the Complex of Goguryeo Tombs designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and touring the maritime border between Korea and China thereby viewing North Korea up close, visiting former sites of the anti-japanese independence movement has been growing in popularity in recent years. These new tourism spots highlight the sites of Korean independence activism during the Japanese colonial period. This study examines trends of Koreans in China and considers the impact of these historical national independence movement sites as tourism locations on Sino-Korean political relations. The study places a particular focus on historical sites connected to the Battle of Cheongsanri, a conflict that took place in October 1920 near
Cheongsanri in modern-day Helong County, Jilin Province between anti- Japanese Korean armed groups and Japanese forces. The battle is viewed in South Korea today as the most successful conflict of the anti-japanese independence movement, and it is referred to as the Great Victory at Cheongsanri. The Korea Liberation Association commemorated the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Cheongsanri and unveiled the Monument to Commemorate the Great Victory at Cheongsanri at the battleground site in 2001. Moreover, a considerable amount of work has taken place at historical sites with connections to General Kim Jwa-jin the supreme commander of the Korean independence forces at the Battle of Cheongsanri in recent years. The General Kim Jwa-jin Memorial League is the organization undertaking these projects; it was also responsible for establishing the Sino-Korean Friendship Garden completed in 2007 and Sino-Korean Friendship Square completed in 2010 in the area where the general once lived Heilongjiang Province in China. The league recruits approximately 60 university students every year to participate in a group tour of institutions connected to Kim Jwa-jin and historical sites connected to Goguryeo and the Bohai Sea and Paektu-san. This study refers to historical celebration activities organized by the General Kim Jwa-jin Memorial League in China as a case study to understand the reality of historical sites linked to the Korean independence movement in northeastern China that have become tourism spots in recent years.
