Effects of Purified Corn Dietary Fiber on Blood Glucose, and Serum and Liver Lipids in Normal Rats and Mice Sachie Ikegami *1, Saeko Ohsawa *1, Shouko Machida *2 and Akiko Hada *2 The National Institute of Health and Nutrition, *2 Tokyo Kasei Gakuin College *1 Effects of soluble corn dietary fiber ( SCDF) and insoluble corn dietary fiber (ICDF ) on blood glucose, serum and liver lipid components were studied in normal rats (4-week old Sprague-Dawley males) and mice (4-week old ICR males ). 1) Postprandial blood glucose at 45 minutes was significantly lower in rats fed SCDF diet than the control group, but not significantly low in rats fed ICDF diet. 2) Triglycerides, phospholipids and total cholesterols in serum significantly decreased in rats fed SCDF diet compared with the control group, but there was observed no change in hepatic lipids. 3) Fasting blood glucose was significantly higher in mice fed SCDF diet than the control group, but postprandial blood glucose at 45 minutes was significantly lower in mice fed SCDF diet. 4) Hepatic total lipids, triglyceride and total cholesterols were significantly lower in mice fed SCDF diet than the control group, but there was observed no change in hepatic lipids. After 7 or 8 days and 32 or 33 days, fasted rats were administered 3g /kg body weight of glucose. The points not sharing a common letter is significantly different by Duncan multiple range test at p< 0.05.
