30 2005. 9 Forum of International Development Studies, 30 Sep. 2005 * Actuality of Social Organization: Exploration of the Everyday World through Institutional Ethnography TAKI Noriko* This paper aims to examine Dorothy E. Smith s feminist research strategy, which is called institutional ethnography. Institutional ethnography is a research strategy that emerged from Smith s explorations of the problematic of the everyday world. The essential point of Smith s project is a critique of objectified knowledges. Institutional ethnography investigates how our everyday life is shaped by the social organization beyond individual scene of everyday life. First, this paper reviews the key points of Smith s sociology from women s standpoint and then her understanding of the everyday world as problematic. Next, it examines institutional ethnography. In addition, it investigates the procedure of institutional ethnography referring to her description of her own experience as the point d appui of inquiry. The last section confirms the possibilities of her approach in addressing contemporary society. E1926 institutional ethnography Smith 1987 work put together notion
