Lesson 5 Grammar notes 1 N o V transitivea direct object of a transitive verb o is used to indicate the direct object of a transitive verb. Niku o tabemasu. I eat meat. o and o are pronounced the same. The former is used only in writing the particle. 2 N ga arimasu There is This sentence pattern is used to indicate the existence or presence of things. The thing in such a sentence is treated as the subject and marked with the particle ga. arimasu is used when what is present is inanimate or does not move by itself. Things, plants and places belong to this category. Konpyuuta ga arimasu. There is a computer. Sakura ga arimasu. There are cherry trees. 3 Quantifiers numbers with counter suffixes They are usually put before the verbs they modify. However, this is not always the case with length of time. See page 38. Tare ga futatsu arimasu. There are two sauces. Counting hitotsu, futatsu, too This is the ordinary system for counting things. A noun used before ni is of the kind denoting an action. Tenpura o tabe ni ikimasu. I am going to eat tempura. 6 V mashoo Let's This expression is used when the speaker is positively inviting the listener to do something with the speaker.
