Separated from the Korean peninsula, it has a peculiar history, culture and natural environment with the mild climate. Jeju-do has 205 thousand households and 560 thousand people. July 2006, Jeju-do became a single municipality and came to have two administrative cities, Jeju-city and Seogwipo-city. Sightseeing and agriculture are the main industries of Jeju-do. Jeju-do has promoted food waste utilization policy aggressively since the end of the 1990's. For food waste utilization, Jeju-do made efforts to reorganize local regulations and administrative systems, secure budgets, construct composting establishments, food waste discharge and collection systems, introduce exclusive waste transport vehicles, arrange food waste discharge containers and educate citizens, etc. Recently, Jeju-do has also been putting an emphasis on maintaining household waste (including food waste) discharge and collection base called Clean House from the angle of the resources utilization, the appearance and the hygiene. Jeju-do's Clean House program is estimated highly as a first match in Korea. As a result of these efforts in Jeju-do, the food waste discharge and collection system has covered the whole area including every household, and all collected food waste is composted now. To make further progress, using this experience, Jeju-do has to make efforts aiming to complete the circulation of food resources, not just as a waste treatment.
