14 Practical Report on Shadowing Pursuing more effective instruction Miyuki DOI, Nanae FUKUTOMI, Yuriko IDE Abstract Many studies have proven that practicing shadowing helps learners improve their foreign language skills, specifically pronunciation and listening skill. However, some learners struggle and cannot appreciate shadowing s effect, while others can perform shadowing without facing problems. One of the aims of this study was to explore how instructors can help students who struggle with keeping up with the speed of the model dialogue. In tutoring sessions, students practiced with a speed- regulated model and the model divided by phrases or sentences. In addition, students did vowel sound reading for the words which they could not pronounce accurately. As a result, their performance and pronunciation improved. In order to respect students autonomy, students who did not need the instructors help practiced shadowing by themselves and kept journals. We found that after practicing, they felt that their shadowing skills improved, especially in the aspects of speed intonation and rhythm. They enjoyed using raw-materials for shadowing practice.
