113 * ** *** * ** *** This study was undertaken to investigate whether a correlation exists between dieting and exercising behavior among female Japanese university students, and further, to develop an effective sports instruction and exercise program for them. Questionnaires were completed by 142 female students at the University in Osaka Prefecture. The results of the survey reveal that some female students exhibit an overly strong interest in dieting and are forgoing healthy eating habits and exercising to attain their goals. These students generally fit into three categories: those who consider themselves slightly overweight, even though their body mass index (BMI) is normal; those who believe that they need to lose weight to attain desirable body proportions; and those who do not exercise regularly. While most of the too-eager dieters are highly aware of the possibility of developing an eating disorder due to their behavior, they persist in regular and vigorous dieting practices. female university students exercise diet
