The effect of maternal walking exercise during pregnancy on pregnancy, delivery and puerperal condition. Etsuko DoiNaomi Kano Department of Nursing, Ibaraki Prefectural of Health Science Abstract Purpose This study aimed at investigating how walking exercise during pregnancy may affect pregnancy, delivery and puerperal condition of primiparous woman having a healthy pregnancy. Methods Descriptive research was carried out at a general hospital in Ibaraki Prefecture to investigate the relationships of exercise with maternal and fetal health by using a prospective approach. The participants of the study were 24 primiparous women experiencing a healthy singleton pregnancy with no complication who were expecting childbirth between August and November in 2008. The participants were divided into two groups with different intensities of prescribed walking, and the effect of the exercise was tested in terms of physical strength and emotional conditions Results delivery or puerperal conditions. Conclusion This study suggested that prescribed walking may improve physical strength and emotional conditions of mothers and fetuses during pregnancy.
