Filipino Americans and their Literature: A study in terms of Postcolonial Perspective Yasuko Kawarasaki Abstract This paper tries to trace the colonial history of the Philippines and analyze how it has affected Filipino American literary representation. The history of colonization has brought about the Filipino immigration to the US, but white America s discrimination made Filipinos hold the Philippines as their true homeland. Accordingly, their writings became inseparable from there. Current Filipino American writers tend to write Filipino postcolonial problems as the subject matter. While Filipino critics strictly accuse this trend, Asian American critics insist a transnational perspective is inevitable for immigrants literature. The controversy raises the serious question of how immigrants can represent their homeland. Key words Postcolonial, Filipino American, Filipino American Literature, controversy fastest growing minority
