Fusarium head blightfhb, or scab, caused by several Fusarium species, is a widespread and destructive disease of wheat and barley. FHB resistance is difficult to evaluate because environmental conditions greatly influence FHB infection and development. To reduce environmental influence in such evaluations in barley, we developed a pot-plant method in which the spikes at the anthesis of barley varieties planted in plastic pots were spray-inoculated and hygrothermal conditions after inoculation were controlled to favor the pathogen s infection and development. Degrees of barley resistance in this method correlated highly with those in the cut-spike methodr0.770.82and field testsr0.680.74, and year-to-year correlations were highr0.790.89, suggesting that the pot-plant method is useful in accurate, stable FHB resistance evaluation in barley. : Fusarium head blight, scab, barley, resistance, testing method, pot-plant method.
