Human Developmental Research 2001, Vol.16, The Relations of Infant Socialization and Culturally-fostered Caregivers' Roll at the Day Care Center in Japan and China Osaka Seikei Women s College UEHARA, Akiko Kansai University of Welfare Sciences KAMESHIMA, Shinya Kobe Kaisei College TAKEUCHI, Nobuyoshi Osaka Gakuin University SOGON, Shunya 12 24 430 This study is the first report of our research project for cross-cultural developmental study. This is also is the first to provide direct observations of Chinese caregivers for one-year-olds using fixed-interval time span sampling methods. A total of 430 10-minutes observations were taken at day care settings in Shanghai, China and Osaka, Japan. Differences were found in cry/fussing category between Japanese and Chinese infants. Cry/fussing behaviors were found in Chinese subjects more frequently than Japanese ones. Socialization in female infants seems to have been facilitated by both cultural and biological factors. When infants were at play, different infant-caregiver interactions were evident between the two nations. Relations of infant socialization and the culturally specific caregivers rolls were also discussed. Key WordsCross-cultural study, Child nurse, Gender differences, Behavioral analysis
