He has published more than 200 scientific papers in the field of pediatric infectious diseases, and received several awards including HHV 6 Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. One of his major achievements is development of varicella vaccine Oka strain in collaboration with Dr. Takahashi and other researchers. This is the only available herpesvirus vaccine. Initially, Dr. Asano and his collaborators applied the vaccine to immunocompromised children in Japan for prevention of severe varicella. Subsequently, it has been widely used to protect healthy children from varicella. Today, approximately 32 million doses of varicella vaccine are used annually in as many as 80 countries. It is noteworthy to mention that approximately 18.5 million doses are given to Asian children annually. Thus, Dr. Asano s contribution to Asian children is enormous. Dr. Asano not only developed varicella vaccine but also discovered a number of important clinical findings of varicella zoster virus infection, such as demonstration of the pathogenesis, efficacy of antiviral treatment, and establishment of effective preventive methods. These achievements also helped many Asian pediatricians deal with this common and occasionally fatal disease. Another important achievement of Dr. Asano

2 relates to exanthem subitum HHV 6 infection, a very common childhood infectious disease. First, Dr. Asano, in collaboration with Dr. Yamanishi and other researchers, identified HHV 6 as the etiological agent of exanthem subitum. He also demonstrated that HHV 6 can cause serious central nervous system complications such as encephalitis encephalopathy, and that reactivation of the virus in hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients is associated with skin rash and fever resembling acute graft versus host disease. Since it has been shown that Asian children are more prone to viral infection associated encephalopathy, and transplantation has become a possible therapeutic option for Asian children suffering from various medical conditions, his studies greatly benefit Asian children. A lot of his achievement was the fruit of his dedication to clinical sciences as well as laborious studies utilizing a large number of case studies by using meticulous clinical analysis, viral isolation, and serological and molecular methods. He also groomed many pediatricians and virologists who are now actively working for children and their families. After retirement from Fujita Health University School of Medicine, he joined a project supported by Japan Science and Technology Agency JST and Japan International Cooperation Agency JICA and has been actively working for control of tuberculosis and trypanosomiasis in Africa. Thus, his achievements in the field of pediatric infectious diseases are outstanding, and saved many children s lives.
