Fecal pellets were egested by the predominant taxonomic groups in zooplankton biomass at the surface, and were also consumed and fragmented by these groups during sink. 3 研究分野 : 海洋学 プランクトン学科研費の分科 細目 : 環境動態 生物海洋キーワード : 海洋科学 海洋生態 環境変動 物質循環 沈降粒子 動物プランクトン 鉛直輸送 1. 研究開始当初の背景海洋中深層は大気との接触から隔離されているため 地球上最大の炭素貯蔵庫となっており この領域への物質輸送は地球温暖化抑制に極めて大きな役割を果たしている 沈降粒子は海洋中深層に物質を供給する主な経路であり 地球規模の物質循環に貢献するほど莫大な輸送を生じている このため 世界中の海洋でセジメントトラップを使って物質輸送を測定することによって研究成果が蓄積されてきた それによると 沈降粒子は珪酸や炭酸カルシウムの殻を持つ植物プランクトンの凝集塊 大型動物プランクトンの糞粒 脱皮殻 死骸などによって形成されるが 沈降中に物理的に断片化あるいはバクテリアなどによる分解を受けながら指数関数的に減少するため 沈降粒子の減耗パターンは深度の関数としてモデル化できるとされてきた このような経験則に基づいて 沈降粒子の減耗モデルを組み込んだ地球規模の物質循環モデルや地球温暖化予測モデルが構築されつつある このような背景のもと 沈降粒子の形成 変容過程における動物プランクトンの影響や鉛直フラックスに対する貢献度については 国際組織の主要課題として重視されつつある これら最新の研究成果によれば 沈降粒子の形成 変容 減耗過程あるいは別の輸送経路に動物プランクトンが大きく関与しているらしいことが指摘され 中深層への物質輸送システムについて再評価すべきであることが示唆されている 2. 研究の目的本研究の目的は (1) 沈降粒子の形成 変容過程に与える動物プランクトンの影響を評価すること (2) 動物プランクトンによる輸送効率の高い経路を定量的に評価することにある これまで 鉛直フラックスでは沈降粒子を形成する植物プランクトンや沈降粒子の物理的 化学的分解過程が重視されてきたが 動物プランクトンによる沈降粒子の形成 変容過程や輸送効率についてはあまり議論されてこなかった そこで本研究では これらの点を生物学的に解析 比較し (1) 動物プランクトン糞粒の形成 変容 減耗と沈降粒子に対する貢献度 (2) 動物プランクトンによる能動的鉛直輸送を明らかにした 3. 研究の方法西部北太平洋亜寒帯域 亜熱帯域および沿岸域をモデル海域とし 船舶による時系列観測 動物プランクトン標本採取 セジメントトラップ実験 船上飼育実験を行い 様々な海洋環境下での動物プランクトン群集や動物プランクトン糞粒の変化を解析しようとした 主な解析手法は以下の通り (1) 漂流セジメントトラップ実験を行って深度別に沈降粒子を採取し 動物プランクトン糞粒 ( 図 1 参照 ) の形状 数 サイズを測定することで 沈降粒子に対する動物プランクトン糞粒の貢献度 沈降に伴う糞粒の変化を調べた これと同時に 動物プランクトンの糞粒に様々な動物プランクトン群集を加えて飼育し 糞粒の消費や断片化の効果を評価する糞粒分解実験を行った 図 1. セジメントトラップで捕捉された沈降粒子中に出現した動物プランクトン糞粒の形態.A: 円柱状糞粒.B: 楕円体糞粒. C: 球状糞粒.D: 不定形糞粒. (2) 多段開閉式ネットで動物プランクトンを深度別に採取し 季節変化を検証する標本を採取した 分類群別に識別計数することで バイオマス 個体数 群集組成を明らかにした これらの動物プランクトンデータ 海洋環境データ 経験的モデルに基づき 動物プラ
4 ンクトンの日周鉛直移動に伴う能動的な鉛直物質輸送量 ( 呼吸フラックス ) を推定した 4. 研究成果 (1) 西部北太平洋亜寒帯域 亜熱帯域の微小プランクトン群集では ピコ植物プランクトンよりもバクテリアのバイオマスが高かった また 微小動物プランクトン餌要求量は バクテリアを餌とすればこれらのバイオマスで十分賄える量だった これらのことから 微小動物プランクトンの捕食が植物プランクトン群集組成に及ぼす影響は小さいことが示唆された (2) 沈降粒子に占めるメソ動物プランクトン糞粒の割合は 西部北太平洋亜寒帯 亜熱帯域共に数パーセント以下であったが メソ動物プランクトンバイオマスが高い海域 時期ほど沈降粒子に対する糞粒の貢献度は高くなった 沈降中に生物によって急速に消費 分解されるか もしくは極めて小さい粒子状に断片化されていた (3) 海洋中深層へ沈降していくメソ動物プランクトンの糞粒は 表層の動物プランクトンバイオマスで優占するカラヌス目カイアシ類から排泄された糞粒 ( 図 1A) がいずれの時期 海域でも多くを占め 沈降に伴って形状は変化しないものの より小型の粒子に断片化 図 2. 糞粒分解実験の結果. 横軸は実験開始時 (PVo) 縦軸は実験終了時の糞粒体積 (PVt) で 点線より下にある場合には実験中に糞粒が消費されたことを示す : 微小動物プランクトンの効果. : メソ動物プランクトンの効果. 赤は統計学的に有意差があったことを示す されていた (4) 糞粒分解実験によると ( 図 2) 動物プランクトンの糞粒はメソ動物プランクトンバイオマスで優占するカイアシ類によって断片化 消費されていた これまで微小動物プランクトンによって糞粒が消費されるという説は 外洋域では再考する必要がある (5) 海洋中深層に輸送される炭素量のうち メソ動物プランクトンによって排泄される糞粒量 ( 受動的炭素輸送 ) と これらの昼夜鉛直移動に伴う呼吸量 ( 能動的炭素輸送 ) を定量的に比較した メソ動物プランクトンが少ない海域 時期では 沈降中に糞粒が減少するため中深層に到達する量が少なくなる しかし オキアミ類やカイアシ類など昼夜鉛直移動する動物プランクトンが海洋中深層へ直接輸送する炭素量 ( 呼吸量 ) は沈降粒子のように減少しない 従って 動物プランクトン群集を介した炭素輸送において 能動的炭素輸送が相対的に重要になることが分かった 5. 主な発表論文等 ( 研究代表者 研究分担者及び連携研究者には下線 ) 雑誌論文 ( 計 12 件 ) (1) M.
