Today I m going to talk about curry. カレーは世界中を旅するやあみなさん今日はカレーについて話すつもりです When you hear the word curry, what country do you think of? あなたがカレーという言葉を聞けばどの国を思いつきますか Yes, India! Many of you know that India is the home of curry. そうインドです! あなたがたの多くはインドがカレーの故郷であると知っています However, do you know that there is no dish called curry in India? しかしながらインドにはカレーと呼ばれる料理はないということを知っていますか Of course, there are many dishes similar to curry in India, but the indian people do not call them curry. もちろんインドにはカレーと似ている多くの料理がありますがインドの人々はそれらをカレーとは呼んでいない In India, people often stew meat or vegetables with various spices. インドでは人々はしばしば肉や野菜をさまざまなスパイスで煮込む A long time ago, the British people began to use the word curry to explain such Indian dishes. ずっと昔にイギリス人はカレーという言葉をそのようなインド料理を説明するために使い始めた It comes from kari meaning a sauce or soup in Tamil. それはタミル語でソースやスープを意味するカリに由来する

Since the late Meiji era, curry has been popular all over Japan. 明治時代の後半以来カレーは日本中で人気となった Some people say it was because the Japanese military adopted curry as a food for its soldiers. それは日本の軍隊が兵隊用の食料としてカレーを採用したからだと言う人もいる Curry was an ideal food for the soldiers because they could make it in large amounts and keep it for a few days カレーは大量に作れて数日間保存することができるので兵隊用に理想的な食料であった When the soldiers went back home, they took the recipe for curry with them. 兵隊が帰宅した時彼らはカレーのレシピを持ち帰った Because of this, people began eating it in many parts of Japan. このために人々は日本の多くの場所でそれを食べ始めた
