20 616 While many of his works have been translated into various languages, Murakami himself has translated many American novels into Japanese. As a translator as well as a novelist, what is Murakami s view of translation? When Das Literarische Quartett, a German T.V. program, took up one of Murakami s novels for discussion, two facts about translation drew the German audience s attention. One was that the German text they read proved to be a re-translation from the English. The other fact was that the English text, upon which the German text was based, was an edited version of the Japanese original. Here was raised a question of the authenticity of the texts. As a novelist, Murakami himself shows quite an easygoing attitude toward translation, saying that he does not mind his works being retranslated and that he is not so worried about details at the level of linguistic expression as long as the story is properly narrated as a whole. Behind Murakami s tolerant attitude toward translation lies his realistic perception that translation will be of an approximate value. As a translator himself, Murakami insists that a translator should not be self-assertive. Aiming at a verbatim translation, he pays regard to diction, word order and even the sound of the words of the original texts when he translates them into Japanese. His policy as a translator is reflected in Lederhosen. The short story is unique in that it was written by Murakami in Japanese, translated into English by Alfred Birnbaum, and re-translated into Japanese by way of English by Murakami himself. In re-translating, just for fun, as he put it, Murakami did not assert his authority as the author to correct Birnbaum s mistranslations, aiming instead at a verbatim translation of Birnbaum s text without clinging to his own original text. Despite his intention to avoid being self-assertive, however, Murakami s characteristic traits of writing seem to shine through even in his translations. Not only his novels but also his translations are Murakami s own work, implying that writing itself is the activity of transferring one world to
