13 Katsuro Yoshida s 1973: A Year Spent in the Japanese Government Overseas Study Program for Artists Masami Yamamoto Katsuro Yoshida ( ), who is primarily known as a Mono-ha artist, studied in London in 1973 as a participant in the Sixth Japanese Government Overseas Program for Artists provided by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. This text looks at his study experience in London and the effect this experience had on his later work. Concerning his life in London, the Overseas Study Program report Yoshida submitted to the Agency for Cultural Affairs at that time offers a detailed account. As an artist involved in the Print Workshop, he learned such techniques as photo-etching and lithography. His production activities in the print workshop resulted in a series of nine photo-etched pieces, London. Through his association with the artists, critics and journalists gathering at the Workshop, moreover, he obtained opportunities to show work in print exhibitions in England and the United States. He also visited numerous art museums and galleries in Europe. Yoshida continued to undertake print production throughout the 1970s, after his return to Japan, but ultimately departed from print methods in favor of the canvas in the early 1980s. Still, he drew deeply from his experiences in London during this time as an instructor in print techniques. After returning to Japan, Yoshida departed from the three-dimensional creation he had undertaken prior to going to London, moving instead toward one-dimensional prints and drawings. This he did in an endeavor to discover a more personal style of expression. For Yoshida, his studies in London represented a new investigation distinct from his three-dimensional work in the so-called Mono-ha style, and gave him opportunity to take a large step forward as an individual creator. 77

This text looks at his study experience in London and the effect this experience had on his later work.
