1 * The Long and Winding Road: US-Philippine Military Bases Negotiations Takuji KIMURA * Abstract Since, the United States and the Philippines developed the special bilateral relationships, which produced the Military Bases Agreement (MBA) as an important embodiment of American military and security commitments. As history passed, however, the Filipino strong nationalistic sentiments led to anti-americanism and, as a result, long and time-consuming talks over MBA between the two countries repeatedly accompanied with bitter disputes and renegotiations for over years. Finally, with effects of such unexpected events as natural disaster and domestic political turmoil in the Philippines, MBA expired as scheduled and the special relationships ended when American military presence ceased to exist in.
